LIFE-SAVING AWARDS

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS. Life r saving and swimming certificates were presented at the Palmerston North Girls’ High School yesterday before an assembly of all the pupils and staff. Others present were Messrs A. Campbell (president of the Manawatu Swimming Centre), W. C. Collier (president of the Manawateu Head Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society of New Zealand), Mr R. Small (secretary), and Mr R. H. Billens (chairman of the Girls 1 High School Parents’ Association). Congratulations were extended to the girls' by Mr Collier in the good work done in the life-saving classes during the past season. Mr Collier was introduced by the principal (Mrs M. Rhodes). He said that while the standard was not perhaps as high as in previous years, that was to be accounted for by the very unseasonable weather which had interfered so much with swimming. Mr Collier stressed the importance of life-saving and hoped, now that the school had its own baths, that a larger number of girls would take advantage of the course. He expressed the society’s appreciation of .the great help given by the staff, and. more particularly by Miss Hume, who was in charge of that department. > Mr Campbell expressed pleasure at the opportunity of being present and congratulated the girls on their swimming achievements. Mr R. H. Billens, in the unavoidable absence of Mr W. L. Fitzlierbert, chairman of the High Schools Board, and the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) stressed the value of swimming and life-saving.
