WOODVILLE.

WOODVILLE, Aug. 17. The monthly meeting of tho Ballanoo Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Windle presiding. Three new members, Miss K. Harris, Mrs A. Tait and Mrs Barry, wero welcomed. A roll call, “Household Hints,” brought forth many worth-while hints. The plain sponge cake competition was won by Mrs Watt, Mrs Gibson second and Mrs D. Brown third. Mrs L. Holdaway gave an interesting and useful lecture on practical hints on home nursing, for which a vote of appreciation was pussed on the motion of the president. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mrs Gibson und Mrs C. Wilton, which was a fitting conclusion to a very enjoyable afternoon. Mrs Oliphant, of Lower Hutt, and Miss Doreen Tennant, of Mnrton, are visitors to Woodvillc. Mr Hugh Tennant, of Honolulu, is on a visit to his parents, Mr and Mrs R. Tennant, of Woodville. Mr L. Hardie, of Nelson, formerly manager of tho Mahiatun branch of the Union Bank of Australia, lias been sponding a few days as the guest of Mr and Mrs C. 11. Arrow. The visit to Woodville on Sunday of the Palmerston North Salvation Army Bund proved a great success, despite wintry conditions. The band arrived at 10 o’clock in tho morning, and spent the hour before church in playing hymn tunes in the street. The afternoon was devoted to a musical programme, and tho large a.udi. ence thoroughly appreciated every item, the whole being in keeping with Salvation Army principles.
