PALMERSTON THEATRES PRESENT SHIELD.

Fast, scientific and thrilling, the first game of hockey on skates at Palmerston North has paved the way for the introduction of another spectacular pastime, and with success achieved in the initial stages, the management of the ue Luxe skating rink, George Street, has been enterprising in arranging a list of matches lor the entertainment of citizens generally. To-morrow evening, on the De Luxe floor, the De Luxe rink team which recently defeated Feilding by a large margin, will be called upon to sustain a challenge from the recently formed Palmerston North Old Boys Club, the representatives having been selectel as folJow: Rink team.—R. Hoare, C. Gordon, A. J. Craighead, B L. Absalom and H. R. Roos. P.N.0.8. —L. Martin, E. V. West, J. Lewis, R. Burt and A. Steere. The advent of skating in this city has been ’ attended with such success that already several skate hockey clubs have been formed, while others are proposed. The handsome challenge cup is apparently not going to be neglected, tor the winners of to-morrow's match are to be immediately challenged by United. This game will therefore be staged on Wednesday, August 26. „ , In addition to these fixtures, a match lias been arranged for tins Saturday evening, when a Wellington representative side is to oppose the De Luxe elect. The visitors are scheduled to play Auckland subsequently, and thus the result of the local fixture will serve to indicate the true merits of the Palmerston North sides. NORTH ISLAND SHIELD. Mr F. Jackson, managing director of Palmerston Theatres, Ltd., informed a “Standard” reporter that the company had signified its intention of donating a North Island Challenge Shield for skate hockey. The trophy is already being manufactured and will be exhibited at an early date. “This shield will be played for by representative teams from all the centres where hockey clubs nave been formed, and should result in some very interesting contests,” stated Mr Jackson.
