OBITUARY.
MR A. M. LYON. Mr Alexander M. Lyon, who died in hospital in Christchurch on Wednesday folloYving a heart seizure, was YvidelyknoYvn throughout New Zealand as one of the Dominion’s most experienced bridge overseers. Mr Lyon was an overseer in the Public Works Department, and had only recently been transferred from Christchurch to Hawke’s Bay, to supervise the construction of several bridges in the North Island. He had gone to Christchurch to attend the racing carnival, prior to going on a month’s leave to Rotorua. He attended the races on Tuesday, and had not been long back at his hotel when he had a heart seizure, and collapsed. He was taken to hospital, where he died on Wednesday. T , For many years Mr Lyon, who Yvas 57 years of age, had been connected with. Public Works Department construction works, and his long experience in connection with bridge construction had made his services invaluable to the Department. He was concerned in the construction oi : ii-j sflendid Staircase Valley viaduct, considered one of the greatest, engineer mg feats in the history of the Now Zealand Railways, in the erection of bridges and viaducts on both the Midland and Main Trunk lines, and in the construction of many of the lighthouses in New Zealand. He had just completed the construction of the bridge in the Manawatu Gorge and had been living at Woodville.
