THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST.
An irregular anti-cyclone now covers the Dominion. A moderate cyclone has been located north-east of East Cape and a fairly deep depression over South-East Australia. Strong southerly winds north of Kawhia and Napier; elsewhere variable at first, but westerly to northerly prevailing and later freshening in and south of Cook Strait. Seas rather rough north of Cape Egmont and Napier; elsewhere moderate in New Zealand waters. Freshening west to north winds in the eastern Tasman Sea, with moderate but rising seas. Weather for the most part fair, but somewhat squally and showery at first north of Kawhia and Castlepoint. Later becoming unsettled in the West Coast and southern districts of the South Island. CLOUDY AND UNSETTLED. Tho Government meteorologist wired to-day: The indications are for moderate to strong northerly winds, freshening, then backing by west to north. There is a prospect of fair to cloudy weather, but later conditions appear likely to become cloudy and unsettled, with rain following. The barometer is falling. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon. —3ft 3ins.
