RAISING FUNDS.
ART UNION SUGGESTED. A somewhat contentious matter was introduced at last night’s annual meeting of the Manawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club when Mr W. Cutler moved that it be a recommendation to the Manawatu Bowling Centre that, as a means to improving the finances of the sporting bodies in Palmerston North, sister organisations be invited to co-operate in the launching of an art union. Mr W. Hunter seconded pro forma, although the speaker considered that there were difficulties to be encountered while, in his opinion, sporting bodies should be self supporting. Mr W. J. Robertson favoured the suggestion, the speaker stating that art unions had come to stay. It would be of immense benefit to the clubs involved to be associated in the venture. The chairman (Mr J. B. Gerrand) considered that it would be derogatory in that it was asking others to pay for their sport while undermining the industry and principles of the members. Mr Corbridge considered that the scheme would be too unwieldy if handled by the Bowling Centre, the speaker maintaining that it would he preferable for the bowling clubs to cooperate. Mr Smillie supported the scheme, mentioning that there were probably 120 organisations seeking permits to conduct art unions at the nresent time. . , , ~ When the motion was put to the meeting it was found that the feeling of the members was against the proposal and the subject lapsed.
