FEILDING BOROUGH’S JUBILEE.

Palherstoniaks will join with the civic authorities in the congratulations they have extended to the Eeilding- Borough Council on the occasion of its jubilee meeting on Thursday evening. Actually, it was fifty years ago at noon to-day since the first Mayor of Eeilding- (Mr D. H. McArthur) and his Councillors assembled to lay the foundations of the neighbouring borough. Much water has flowed under the bridge since then, but it lias always been in the direction of progress. Due to the foresight and ability of the gentlemen who planned and worked for the progress of Eeilding, a thriving township very quickly developed in the Manchester Block. It was a pleasing occasion on Thursday evening for the past Mayors when they attended the jubilee meeting. Chiefly was it so for Mr E. Goodbehere who was present at the first meeting of the original council as the representative of a newspaper, and in subsequent years was to fill the Mayoral chair on three occasions and to serve on the Council for nearly a quarter of a century. Such service was but typical of the pioneer colonists, and is an inspiration to the generation of today. To be imbued with the same ideals shows a lofty spirit of citizenship. To Mr W. Carthew, the first Eeilding-born resident to occupy the Mayoral chair, it was also an auspicious event. These gentlemen may well take pride that the works instituted by them and others who held office have assisted very materially in the development of their town. Though, as Mr Goodbehere told the Borough Council on Thursday evening, the residents had “met with disappointments, they should be satisfied with their good, clean, healthy and sound town.” Its soundness cannot be questioned, neither can the fact that, with the extensive and valuable farming areas of which it is the centre bringing wealth to the town, Eeilding must record a generous measure of progress in the next fifty years.
