Lively play marked the preliminaries and in the first three minutes Nicholls kicked an easy penalty goal,, and Bush missed a chance to equalise. North 3; South 0. The bustling South forwards kept the North defending. The attacking backs were fed. But could not penetrate the Nicholls-Cooke combination, which was superior to Day and Oliver. The North then attacked and were awarded a penalty from which Nicholls landed another goal from wide out. North 6, South 0. Play continued at a brisk pace, tlie teams being evenly matched. Hart • ide a great solo bid down the line, oat was pushed over at the corner flag. The subsequent pipy was in the Southern territory, though tlie activities of the North backs were limited by tlie South forwards, with Manchester, Andrews and Max prominent. They were a useful force, dribbling effectively, but the lino kicks of Lilburne anti Cooke generally returned play. North were revealing better combination, and their clever moves had the opposition guessing. A wonderful solo try by Nicholls saw him side-step several players, go through the defence from tho twentyfive line and score near the posts, and goal. North 11, South 0. Strang then opened South’s i ecount with a good penalty kick. North 11, South 3. Fallowing this Lilburne cleared the way for a try by McLean. Nicholls missed with the kick. North 14, South 3. Just on the call of half-time Strang scored from another penalty, and the scores were. North 14, South 6. Tight work among the forwards marked the resumption, handling mistakes nullifying the efforts of the hacks to get under way. Front a line-out near the North line, Max secured the ball and his weight carried him over. Strang missed with the kick. North 14, South 9. Cooke was well bottled uj and could do little. A splendid North handling movement, the backs and forwards combining, ended with an inlnngement near the posts. The South forwards were applying their weight to better advantage and pushing their opponents oft the ball. The "North wing three-quarters were disappointing, attractive moves frequently breaking down at the end of the chain. Ihe changing fortunes sustained the interest, but there was much ragged play. Strang added a penalty from in front of the posts. North 14, South 12. AAritli two points’ difference in tlie scores, the struggle became very keen. The South attacked, when clever reverse passing by Allan and Oliver ended in the latter scoring in the corner. Strang kicked a goal. Hart was fed from the blind side outside the twentyfive and scored a fine solo try on the corner. Watson- received an injury and was replaced by Bullock-Douglas. Ten minutes were now left for play. Lilburne made an opening for Cooke,-who scored. Then Steere broke from the ruck and fed Bullock-Douglas, who scored in the corner. Lilburne missed with the kick. Tho game soon finished with the scores:— North Island 20, South Island 20.
Brown scoring and Roberts kicking a goal. W. Brown at this stage was hurt and retired, Vincent replacing him. The visitors were now getting the ball from the scrum more frequently, and their backs had every opportunity. Good passing ended in Sweeney (Canterbury) crossing and Roberts converting. Wanganui were now demoralised, but faulty handling by the visitors let the local team into the Canterbury territory and twice Wanganui were almost over. Tlie visitors cleared and in turn attacked, Iv. Brown all but scoring. Hazelliurst essayed a pot at the goal, but he missed an easy chance.
