EXTRAORDINARY SCENES.
TENANT NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE HOME. An extraordinary situation arose at Collingwood, Melbourne, tho other day, over tho eviction of a woman and her children from a house in Alexandra Parade, owing to the non-payment of rent. About 300 unemployed men from Fitzroy and Collingwood intervened, and tiiey refused to allow the woman to leave tho house, although she wished to do so. When tho bailiffs arrived they were confronted by an angry assemblage of unemployed men. Tho woman had her belongings packed ready for removal, and she told the unemployed men that she had obtained another ‘house. The leaders replied that the house to which she proposed to go was not suitable, and that they would not allow her to leave Alexandra Parade. . Tho bailiffs sent a message to the Collingwood police station, and several constables arrived. Threatening words were used to the police, who wore told that, if they interfered, there would ho a serious disturbance. Tho arrival of police reinforcements from headquarters, however, had tho effect of quietening tho demonstrators, and it was agreed that the woman and her children should remain in tho house until next day.
