BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS
MANAWATU COMPETITORS SUCCESSFUL. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Aug. 5. The New Zealand amateur boxing championships opened to-niglrt before a large attendance. The entries total 84, which is a record. The competitors and delegates were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr W. H. Woods, on behalf of the borough. Results are as follow: LIGHTWEIGHT. Bennie (Napier), 9.10, beat JSimonsen (Marlborough), 9.4). The winner was the better boxer in an even bout. L. Ennis (Timaru), 9.9, beat D. Cree (Ashburton), 9.6. ‘ The winner was too clever, but both took heavy, punishment. M. Candy (Manawatu), 9.13, beat J. Kelly (Southland), 9.11. There was cautious, solid fighting in all the rounds. E. Oxley (Manawatu) won by default from S. Common (Ashburton). N. Moulin (Christchurch), 9.10, beat R. Hutchison (Hawke’s Bay), 10.0. A clean and interesting bout, and very fast. FEATHERWEIGHT. L. Driberg (Napier), 8.12), beat C. Rayner (Marlborough), 8.12, in the first round. The loser was knocked out in tho first minute.
J. Franklin (Gisborne), 8.13), beat W. Murphy (Timaru), 8.2). The winner carried the fight and the towel was thrown in in tho second round. P. G. Hawes (Christchurch), 8.12, beat C. Buckley (Otago), 8.13, after both had taken heavy punishment in a close contest. D. J. Donkin (Hawke’s Bay) won by default from F. Holden (Manawatu). R. Purdie (Auckland), 9(0, beat F. Richardson (Wellington), 9.0. The best ring-craft of the evening was shown in this bout. Purdie won all the way. W. Hawes (Westport) won by default from J. Ramsay (Oamaru). A. Turner (New Plymouth), 8.13, beat A. McPhee (Greymouth), 8.9, in a fast, clean, interesting fight. Both took heavy, punishment. WELTERWEIGHT. W. Hogg (Napier), 10.6, heat J. McMahon (Taihape), 10.4. A very evenbout. The winner was more scientific. P. Lundy (Ashburton) won by default from L. Riley (Taihape). A. Taylor (Hawke’s Bay) won by default from M. Candy (Manawatu). M. Burke (Southland), 10.8, heat R G. Forward (Christchurch). A good forcing bout. Burko did most of the leading. HEAVYWEIGHT.
L. Painter (Auckland), 12.6, beat F. Scliumanski (Timaru) on a technical knock-out in the third round. Hie winner did the forcing. G. Croft (Greymouth). 11.13, heat G. Altey (Ashburton). 13.7. Both were staggering at the finish. Croft won on science. , R. J. Rains (Christchurch). 11.12, beat J. Luttrell (Hawke’s Bay), 11 8. A slow and fairly interesting bout. Tho winner bad the advantage of height. J. Cossill (Manawatu). 12.0, beat G. Spencer (Southland), 13.2, in an even, punishing fight. It was a popular decision.

Jt was a dull bout until the last round, when the winner made the fighting. | MIDDLEWEIGHT. A. Dasler (Marlborough) won by de- ' fault from E. Collins (Timaru). J. Croft' (Greymouth), 11.4, beat L. Strickland (Wellington), 10.10. The 'winner forced the pace all the way. j BANTAMWEIGHT. I C. Warne (Manawatu), 8.0, beat W. Davey (Christchurch), 8.0). A fast fight,' in which the loser had a poor defence. J. Richmond (Otago), 8.1), beat S. Hendry (Westport), 8.1, in three clean, open rounds. I LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT. J. Cossfll (Manawatu) beat J. Tierney (Marlborough) on a technical knock-out in the first round. | H. Lister (Greymouth), 11.4, beat R. Strickland (Masterton), 11.0. In a solid fight, the winner forced the fight all the way. I F. J. Prendergast (Southland), 11.9, beat J. Luttrell (Hawke’s Bay) in the second round on a technical knock-ouf. Luttrell fought gamely. S. Cowan (Auckland) won by default from E. Pocock (Christchurch).
