NORDEN CUP GAME. MANAWATU bIeAT WANGANUI. The Manawatu hockey representatives had little difficulty in reetaining the Norden Cup in their match with Wanganui at the Sportsground vesterday afternoon. It was but a mediocre display, Manawatu having the better of the match to win by three goals to nil. Many people were present to watch the game. The teams were as follow: * Manawatu (green and white). —A. Ward, W. Sutton, T. Pratt, W. Lundy, J. Sutton, N. Hansen (captain), Findlay, D. Hoare, It. Hoare, J. Morris, V. Turner. Wanganui (blue and black). —N. Hughes, G. Adams, A. Hickman, L. Wilson, W. Bannin, B. Mclntyre, S. Hughes, A. Le Brun (captain), C. Connell, D. Tizard, R. Hughes. Wanganui secured from the bullyoff. but R. Hoare intercepted and carried the ball into the visitors’ area. Wanganui were awarded a penalty for “sticks” and Mclntyre led them into the Manawatu territory. W. Sutton remained steady, but his brother, J. Sutton, was troubled by Le Brun. W. Sutton relieved with a penalty hit, but Wanganui held oh and a struggle resulted between D. Hoare and McIntyre. The Manawatu man won, but little advance was made despite the splendid support offered by Lundy and Pratt. Up and down movements prevailed for a time and it appeared that Tizard would open the visitors’ account, but he failed to shoot accurately. Lundy cleared and passed to Findlay, but the latter’s shot at goal was well stopped by N. Hughes. Manawatu had to retire temporarily through Adams’s fine defensive work, but they returned with increased vigour and from a melee in front of the goal Hansen beat Hughes with a smart shot. Manawatu 1, Wanganui 0. Manawatu again attacked, but Bannin secured and eased by sending to S. Hughes whose line work tested Pratt. The latter cleared nicely, but Wanganui were awarded a free hit. Tizard took the shot and troubled Ward after successfully evading J. Sutton, but the goalie cleared. Turner and Findlay, Manawatu’s wingers, led frequent invasions into Wanganui’s territory, but the latter’s backs were equal to the occasion. After a period of give' and take play, S. Hughes and Le Brun started a promising assault, but the latter’s shot at goal was disallowed as he was outside the circle when shooting. R. Hoare was playing splendidly in Manawatu’s forward line, while Wanganui owed their immunity from heavy defeat to Adams’s work. Half-time was called with Wanganui pressing. SECOND SPELL. The teams were altered slightly when play recommenced. Lundy was changed from left half to the forward line, exchanging with Morris, while in the visitors’ ranks Mclntyre went to the position of right inside and Adams to left half, Le Brun going from right inside to left back. Wanganui opened promisingly, but Pratt stemmed the rush and Manawatu effected a return to invade through the agency of R. Hoare. N. Hughes cleared at the goal mouth, however. Soon after W. Sutton took charge and shot out to R. Hoare, who beat the goalkeeper after a struggle. Manawatu 2, Wanganui 0. • Wanganui failed to rally at the bully-off and Manawatu again dominated play. D. Hoare secured the ball and crossed to Lundy. The pair combined successfully and Hoare completely mastered the goalie a few minutes later. Manawatu 3, Wanganui 0. The home team was undoubtedly playing superior hockey, the visitors’ chief fault being the “wandering” from position by the majority of their men. Turner raised Manawatu’s hopes of a further, goal when he broke away, but the shot was disallowed. On a later occasion he was almost through when Adams interrupted with success. S. Hughes put Wanganui in a goaling position when he partnered with Connell to attack. The effort was well sustained, but Ward kicked the ball clear. Pratt took up the running and passed to Lundy who passed on to R. Hoare, but Hickman smothered Hoare’s attempt and crossed to Wilson whose fine hockey gave Wanganui hope of scoring. Again Ward cleared. In the concluding stages of the game there were frequent bright dashes, but Manawatu dominated play and were in a premising position when time sounded. Messrs A. E. Blackbourn and G. Howartson refereed.
