LATE MR C. H. WARDEN
IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL. WANGANUI. Aug. 3. The remains of the late Mr Charles H. Warden, headmaster of the Wanganui East School and president of the Wanganui 3letropolitan Rugby Union, who formerly resided in Palmerston North, were laid to rest in the Aramoho Cemetery yesterday, the larse and representative gathering testifying to the esteem in which the late gentleman had been held and to the fine service he had rendered in spheres outside his school. A short service was conducted at 'the residence by Rev J. Paterson after which the coffin, on which was carried the royal blue and blac-k jersey of the Wanganui Rugbv Union, wa3 conveyed to St. Paul's Church. The building was packed and an impressive service was conducted by Rev. 3D Paterson, assisted by Revs. V. A. Bianchi and H. G. Goring. Rev. 3fr Paterson, paying a tribute to 3lr Warden's high ideals of citizenship. said that many had cause to remember him as schoolmaster, friend and citizen. He had always taught citizenship in his school, fitting hoys and girls for the parts they had to play. His teachings had gone out with the pupils to all parts of_ the Dominion. 3D Paterson also referred to 31 r Warden's love for the athletic field and to his devotion as husband and father. A long procession of cars left the church for the cemetery. As the cortege passed the Aramoho School, the pupils, staff and committee, stood at the salute. All walks of life were represented in the large concourse of people who gathered at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs A. Crawford. J. H. Bree, W. A. Lynn. C. W. Liggins, J. Glenn and F. C. Janmngs. The Education Department was represented by the director (3D T- B. Strong; and the chief inspector (Mr W. T. Lamboume). 3D W. G. Blaikie and the other members of the inspectorate in Wanganui were present, and the board was represented by Mr . H Swanger. Several members oi tne United Lodge (3ianawatu) were present and the impressive Masonic service was conducted by the officers or that institution, of which 3lr_3\ arcien was a life member. The cofim was plaved to the grave by Pipe-major Thompson. All the bodies with which 3l r Warden had been • connected in Wanganui were represented. Rev. J. S. King and Rev. J. Paterson officiated at the graveside and when tne service concluded boys oi the aa ganui East School bugle band sounded the Last Poet. The royal blue jersey was laid beside the remains in tne gr \t 6 ’the Police v. Press Rugby match on Saturdav the teams and .spectators stood for a few moments in while the Wanganui Highland , Ripe Band played "The Flowers o de Forest,” in memory or the late gentle “Tt St James’ Presbyterian Church, Wanganui East, yesterday morning. Rev. G. S. King made reference to the sudden passing away or 3D " arde and paid a high tribute to his quail ties.
