RUSSIAN BUTTER
BIG SHIPMENT IN LONDON. i NEW ZEALAND BOXES COPIED. BUT DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph .■ —Copyright.) (Times Cables.) Received August 3, 8.5 a.m . LONDON, Aug. 1. ■ The Soviet steamer Smolny discharged 12,000 barrels and 4000 boxes of Rusisan butter at London yesterday. According to an Empire butter authority, the boxes are an exact copy of the boxes used by New Zealand. Every dimension is the same, even the grading ijiark stencilled outside being the same. When the outer covering is removed there is nothing to enable the purchaser to distinguish between it and the New Zealand article, unless the grocer himself uses an identifying ticket. “Under the present state of the law we have absolutely no remedy against the imitation of our boxes,” said a New Zealand butter expert, who added that the procedure indicated an urgent need for protective measures. Another expert comment relative to the Shipment is as follows: “The pity is that onoe the present lot is uncased there is nothing to distinguish it, except the quality, the proof of which is best shown by the fact that Russian butter is still significantly twelve shillings a hundredweight below the Antipodean product.”
