GARRISON BAND

FIRST CONCERT OF SEASON. At the Opera House, last evening, the Palmerston North Garrison Band presented their first concert of the season. Under their conductor, Lieutenant Cox, the band provided a most entertaining programme and one that augured well for the future. Light and shade were conspicuous in the interpretation of the items, which were selected to please all tastes. Appearing with the hand were the Dominionwide known New Zealand Maori Choir and Entertainers. Their performance in the city some months ago doubtless served as a very fine testimonial to their ability, and the band’6 admirers were not disappointed last evening. Comprising such well-known artists as Mr and Mrs Wereta (nee Miss E. Grennell, L.A.8.). Messrs D. and W. Nikora and Mr H. Itikihana, with a splendid chorus, the entertainers satisfied the demands of the audience admirably, recalls being frequent. The programme was judiciously arranged with strict attention paid to quality and quantity. The band, of twentyeight players, is a well established combination and its contributions to the programme whetted the audience’s anpetite. The concert was soiendid all through. The programme wns as follows: March, “Australasian” _ (Rimmer). Garrison Band; selection, Maori Choir; violin solo, “Tambourine” (Bohm), Mr H. Rikihana; quartettes, ' Hinemoa,” “E Hine,” Mr and Mrs AVereta and Messrs D. and W. Nikora; poi dance, girls; vocal solo, “Pokarekare,” Miss Wallace; selection. Garrison Band; yodelling song, Mr W. Nikora; long poi dance, girls; selection, “Awlri mai ra,” Maori choir; selection, “Carmelite” (Lorene), Garrison Band; double poi dance, girls; violin solo, “The Rosary,” Air H. Rikihana; trio, “Mechanical Man,” Mr and Airs Wereta and Mr Nikora; vocal solo, “E Pari Ra,” Miss Ropata ; selection, “Tema ngakau marie,” Maori choir; vocal solos, “Waiata Poi,” “Maori War Song,” Mr H. Tahiwi; hymn, “Bradford,” Garrison Band; farewell haka, Alaori party. The proceedings were under the direction of Air W. Newlands, secretary of the hand, to whom credit is clue for the able manner in which he carried out his duties. Ably assisting as stage manager was Air H. Taliiwi.
