WINTER RACING

MANAWATU' FIXTURE CONCLUDES MANIFESTO BEATS THE SPBINTEBS Although the day. was fine, a cold easterly wind which blew into the stands made matters very uncomfortable for patrons at the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting at Awapuni yesterday. The attendance of the public was somewhat limited and a sharp drop. in the totalisator returns was recorded, the sum of J 5.7553 being handled as compared with £14,227 for the second day last year—which was a Saturday —making an aggregate of £15,638 10s as against £25,692 twelve months ago—a decrease of £10,053 10s. LOCAL HORSES FARE WELL. the final event—the Mcßae Handicap

the final event —the Mcßae Handicap—and the Lackhain gelding duly carried his backers through, although he had to stall off a doterminod challenge from Arajean, who finished full of running after having met with a bump which sent her almost on to her knees after the jump out. Coon Song was closely attended by Blue Paper over the early stages with Juggle and Manifesto handy. Crossing tho top Coon Song was clear of Bluo Paper and Juggle with Manifesto and Great Charter handy. Blue Paper was tho first to give way and then Coon Song was beaten at tho distance, Manifesto running to the front with Great Charter coming through on the • rails and Arajean on tho outside. Manifesto responded to pressure and he drew clear of Great Charter, but Arajean got to within a neck of him by the time the post was reached, Great Charter being half a length back. Juggle wa3. beaten into fourth place with Coon Song ahead of Sight Draft and Blue Paper. ' THE DETAILED RUNNERS.

The outstanding feature of the day’s racing was the success of locally trained horses, the first five races finding the lpcal candidates successful in every instance, this centre’s record for the day being five firsts, three seconds and two thirds. The racing was again interesting, Merry Damon showing a return to form when he won the Newbury Handicap. Llandudno took the Longburn Hurdles with two other Awapuni candidates in Cal lam art and Llyn Du attending him home, while in the Mcßae Handicap—the open flat sprint —Manifesto, who enjoyed a * beter run than on the opening day, won from Araiean and Great Charter, Arajean having been the unlucky runner on this occasion. Following is the description of the races decided after the first edition of the “Standard” went to press yesterday : MERRY DAMON WINS. There were no withdrawals from the Newbury Handicap, for which Royal Opera., who had run a god race on the opening day, was backed down to a short price, with Manawhenua and Fitzquex next in demand. However, the favoured fancies were beaten out of the places, the winner, turning up in Merry Damon, with Air Laddie, the second outsider of the field, paying a nice dividend for secplace. As they went away from home Fitzquex, Pahu and Royal Opera were in charge, but the last-named went to the front going into the back, while Pahu also displaced FitzqueS. Next in order in a well-bunched field wero Manawhenua, Royal Game, Air Laddie and Merry Damon. Crossing the top Royal Opera was still in charge from Pahu, with Air Laddie and Fitzquex next, but when heads were straightened out for home Merry Damon immediately ran up and with Air Laddie drew clear. The Polydamon gelding finished strongly to win from Air Laddie, a length separating them at the post, with a gap of two lengths to Pahu. The favourite was fourth, being followed home by Manawhenua and Royal Game. WIN FOR LLANDUDNO.

All started in the Longburn Hurdle Handicap. On the strengtu of his showing in the big flat race yesterday Llyn Du was entrusted with the major portion of the money on the machine, but he had to submit to defeat by his fellow Awapuni representative, Llandudno and Callamart. Gourmet made the pace from Llandudno in the early stages of the race, the pair being four lengths clear of Llyn Du as they passed thiough the straight, Auctioneer and War Zone being next in attendance. Going into the back, Llandudno was taken to the front from Gourmet, Auctioneer, Llyn Du, Unoco and Callamart. Crossing the top, Llandudno’s superior pace carried him well clear of his' field, Llyn Du and Callamart being both under pressure two furlongs from home. Although he took liis final fence indifferently, Llandudno again drew away on the flat in the run to the post to beat Callamart by four lengths with Llyn Du five lengths away. Auctioneer was a poor fourth, with Desert Lad, Unoco and Gourmet in a bunch. VICTORIA HANDICAP TO NIGHTMARE. , There were no defections from the Victoria Handicap, in which a field of eight faced the barrier. Nightmare and Adventus dominated the betting and the pair fought out the finish, a great race up the straight seeing tl.vr topweigh.t get home from Adventus by a short head. Brown Abbey and Kissless made the pace coming on to the course proper from Patacroa, Acrospire, Adventus and Nightmare. Crossing the top, Kisslcss worked up on the rails, while Patearoa joined Brown Abbey on the outside. Kisslcss immediately ran f;o the front on reaching the straight with Adventus and Nightmare coming up fast. The latter jjair had Kisslcss beaten at the distance and they drew clear to fight out the finish, Nightmare seeing it out best to win by a short head with a gap of three lengths to Kissless. Acrospire got up to take fourth placo with Thrasher next. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. Trojun Melody and Beverage were the only pair sought after in the Milson Handicap, the former being entrusted with £165 more than his companion, but the 21 lbs. disparity in the weights told against the Awapuni representative in the run home, and Beverage scored comfortably at tho finish. Trojan Melody and Beverage immediately ran to tho front with tho others racing in line. Half a' mile from homo Trojan Melody was in tho lead, but Boverage closed on him again approaching tho entrance and, with heads straightened out for home, the challenger ran past the leader and, although he shot over on to the rails very sharply when the wjtip was applied, he was going away again at the post, there being a gap of two and a-lialf lengths between the pair with another interval of five lengths to Hystride, with Park Acre fourth. GISBORNE CLUB’S MEETING. FIASCO IN STEEPLECHASE. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, July 23. The steeplechase meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club opened to-day in dull weather. There was a fair attendance and the course was in particularly good condition. The totalisator investments were £4112, compared with £9826 on the first day last year. In the Steeples there were only two starters. While Handy took the lead early and fenced with great capability, Kamehameha offered no opposition after 'the first half mile and refused to negotiate each of the brush doubles. Handy secured a lead of half a mile. Kamehaineha again refused at the board fence and unshipped his jockey. It was not until Handy had lapped him and given him a lead over the boards that he got past this obstacle and completed the task by dint of much strugggling on the part of the jockey. Eventually he passed the judge’s box after Handy’s rider had weighed in.
