RAILWAY SLEEPERS WANTED.
POOR RESPONSE BY THE UNEMPLOYED. Work for at least 100 men will be found in North Coast forests very shortly (says the Casino correspondent of a Sydney paper). Some months ago an agent of the Chinese Government when in Australia intimated that the Chinese Government required a large quantity of railway sleepers, and stated that Australian timber was most suitable. New South AVales firms interested themselves, and Messrs R. K. White and Co., who have been operating at Wauchope, have secured a contract for the supply of sleepers, 1,000,000 of which are required. Other New South Wales firms have also secured contracts. Messrs White and Co. have been in communication with the Forestry Department, and will soon commence operations in Whian Wliiafi forest, near Dunoon. Four years’ work for about 100 men is said to be available, although it is remarkable that when a representative of the firm asked for the services of 100 men,' only one man at Casino unemployed camp, which has more than 1000 people under canvas, offered to go sleeper cutting. It is stated that the sleepers will be railed to Byron Bay and then shipped by Chinese steamers to China.
