BITUMINOUS COAL.
t INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE. The Third International Conference on bituminous coal is to be hold under the auspices of the Carnegie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh from November 16 to 21 next. The purpose of the congress is similar to that of the congress held in 1926 and 1928; at it the results of recent studies of coal, emphasising improved methods of utilisation and their economic value, will be presented for discussion. The programme will include papers on the carbonisation, liquefaction, and gasification of coal by-products, the mechanism of combustion, cleaning of coal and its preparation for the market, pulverised fuel power plants, and domestic heating. All invitation is extended by the Carnegie Institute to scientists in all countries to take part in the conference.
