RACING NEWS.

WORKERS AT AWAPUNI. WINTER CONDITIONS PREVAIL. (By “Binocular.”) Regular ■winter • conditions —a heavy track with falling rain—made matters uncomfortable for training operations at Awapuni yesterday morning and few horses bettered ISsec. to the furlong. • Merry Damon (W. Broughton) and his half-brother. Merry Melody (Milham) required 2.0 2 5 to cover a mile on the outside of the course proper, the first five furlongs taking 1.16 3-5. Merry Damon will contest the Whyte Memorial Handicap at Trenthain, while Merry Melody will be given an outing in. the highweight company. Royal Black (Mellis) was a partner for Pohu (Grylls) over seven furlongs run in 1.47 2-5, the first half mile being left behind in 59 2-5. Royal Black handled tho going quite well, but he does not claim any engagements at Trentham where Pahu will content the Parliamentary Handicap. Trojan Melody (W. Broughton) and Wallaruh (Wilkinson) recorded the smartest effort of the morning when they left five furlongs behind in 1.9. The former has always appreciated heavy going and tho Hunting Song gelding will come in on the final day at Trentham. Seneschal (Mellis) an-d Gambler (A. E. Stratton), with good weights up, ran six furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the first three furlongs being left behind in 45 2-ssec. The former is a candidate for tho Te Aro Handicap.

Two maiden performers in Park Acre (Boyd) and a Star Stream mare (W. Broughton) negotiated seven furlongs in 1.51, neither being asked to give of their best although both handled the heavy going well. Sight Draft (N. Voitre) and Morrath (McDowell) strode away from the seven furlong post, but they did not speed up t il after passing the three furlong post. Timed , from the latter mark, they came homo in 45see., Sight Draft being very anxious to have her head. Dlandudno (A. K. Stratton) wa« sent a round over the battens, but the Formative gelding clouted the majority of his fences hard. Oallamart (Stratton), who, like Llandudno, claims an engagement in the Vittoria Hurdles at Wellington, gave a cleaner display of fencing, although tho Callaghan gelding probably, jumped a shade big. Omeo’s leg appears to be answering to treatment, for the Quarantine gelding strode out quite freely over a mile with a fair poundage up, although he requiod 2.7 2-5 to accomplish his task. GENERAL. Lack, the Lackham —Darktown youngster who claims relationship with Seatown, lias been disposed of by Mr W. Bailey and this- promising rising two-year-old will be trained at Woodvillo in future. Ebeum, another of Lackham’s progeny, from a half-sister to Inali, is making satisfactory progress in his education. Tho name applied to him is an Australian aboriginal term meaning “little man.” Llyn Du is looking burly and well after his spell, but lie was kept under restraint in his round of the course proper. Meantime he looks a trifle big in condition to race at Trentham. MANAWATU RACING CLUB. CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS. A final reminder is given owners and trainers that nominationo for all events at tho winter meeting of the Maawatu Racing Club to be held at Awapuni on July 22 and 23, close to-night at nine o’clock. Last winter the club raced on the linal day of the old season and tho opening day of the present season, but by advancing its dates this year, the club should gain a direct benefit, for it attends the Wellington meeting, and the majority of the visaing contingent from the South Island and from tho Auckland district will reaniin no doubt for the local fixture. Then will fellow the Grand National meeting at R.ucarlon, so owners and trainers will be furnished with an exceptional opportunity

to bring their horses up to lop form should they have designs on the big races down south. HAWKE’S BAY MEETING. BON ARYAN WINS STEEPLECHASE. HASTINGS. July 2. The winter meeting of tho Hawko’e Bay Jockey Club opened at Hastings to-day in fine weather. The fixture was being held under difficulties, as tho official stand could not bo used as a result of tho earthquake, while the main stand had to be repaired for use as the secretary’s office. The jockeys’ room and weighing room were housed in the tea kiosk.

Tho arrangements, despite these handicaps, worked smoothly. The attendance was large, but money was not plentiful. Tho turnover for tlio day on the the 10s totalisator was £5890, being a dccreaso of £3145 on the £9035 on the oponing day last year. There were no serious mishaps in the jumping events. Results: —
