AUSTRALIAN AIRMAN.
PATHETIC TRAGEDY. BOMBAY, July 1. A ragedy was enacted on the sands at Juhu, a fashionable seaside resort near Bombay, yesterday, when the Australian airman, Captain Hairy Darbv, committed suicide by taking poison. Darby was responsible for the death of a rickshawman recently. He left two letters, one of which stated his intention of taking his life, but he gave no reason. Darby had been living on a lavish scale at an hotel in Juhu.
In March Darby shot a rickshawman by accident. At his trial a Madras magistrate found it "a rash negligent act, not amounting to culpable homicide,” and sentenced him to imprisonment until the rising of the Court which was purely nominal. Darby also was fined 1000 rupees, the whole amount of the fine to be paid as compensation to the widow and children of the rickshawman. Darby lodged £250 with the Administrator for the benefit of the rickshawman’s family.
