FARMERS AND WAGE-TAX.
NO INCOAIE —NO PAYAIENT. (Bv Telegraph. —Special to Standard.) AVELLINGTON, July 2. “How will it affect small farmers who have practically no income?” asked Air J. AA 7 . Bitchener, of the Minister of Labour, Hon. S. G. Smith, when he was explaining that all income tax payers will be required to pay threepence in the £1 on last year’s declared income, payable, if desired, in two instalments. “The farmer,” replied Air Smith, “pays the flat levy of £1 and at the end of the year he declares his income. If he has no income he pays no moie. AA 7 e are not going to make him make out an income tax return. A\ 7 e hope to simplify, that for the farmer.” It was later explained by the Prime Alinister that farmers who rendered no income tax return would make a declaration of their year’s income as the basis for -the emergency tax.
