RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
The clothing depot in Cuba Street is being kept extremely busy; so much so that a doorkeeper has had to be installed to regulate the number entering the shop at one time. The cases that cannot be handled in the one day are dealt with first tho following morning. Yesterday at the food depot was a. busy day, 133 families having been given supplies. Citizens are invited to notify the depot of any eases of real need that are not being attended to. In a number of cases there is a reluctance on the part of some in real distress to avail themselves of the relief provided by the community. For instance, in one such case brought under the committee’s notice, on sympathetic investigation it was found that people had been living on nothing but bread and water for a whole week.
A supply of coal has now been added to the fuel department, and those in need of wood or coal should notify the depot in Cuba Street to that effect. Deliveries are being effected every afternoon.
