(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, June 30.
A meeting of the Foxton Unemployment Committee was held last evening, presided over by tho Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau). The register showed that 127 men started work under the No. 5 sohemo locally this week, while tho total registrations numbered IEO. The secretary reported that, owing to the receipt of a commun cation from tho Unemployment Board curtailing tho local estimate for the ensuing week by almost half, tho men’s tiino had had to be cut down accordingly. Mr Shaw reported that Mr R. Ilepner had donated a fat cow to the relief depot and was prepared to employ a certain number of men on gorse grubbing work at 10s per day. Mr Hepnei's offer was gladly accepted and ho was accorded tho committee’s thanks.
Tho annual report of tho Foxton Horticultural Society states inter alia that two shows wero held during tho year. Tho spring show showed an increase over the preceding spring show on entry fees of £4 14s 6d and door takings by 8s and tho summer show a decrease in entry fees of £3 6s 6d and door takings, a decrease of £4 Is 3d. Tho membership for tho season was 81, as against 92 for tho previous year. A very interesting inter-club match was played on tho Herrington links between the local and Levin clubs. In. the foursomes match tho visitors won three games to two, one game being halved. In the singles, Levin won six games, Foxton five and one game unfinished. July 1. It was with deep regrot that koxton residents learned of the death of Mrs E. E, Fairey, at Palmerston North, on Monday. Mrs Fairey resided in Foxton for some time with her husband who was in business locally and during ■‘hat time endeared herself to a largo circle of friends. Miss Mountfort, who for some time has been in charge of tho infant department at the local High School, severed her connection with the school on Tuesday to tako up a position under the Auckland Education Board. Mr P. J. Mairs loft Foxton yesterday to take up his residence in Rongotea. Mr W. Adams, a member of the Wanganui Education Board, visited tho local school yesterday and addressed tho children. Mr Adams was a former master of tho school.
The Methodist Boys’ and Girls’ Club visited Oroua Downa and gave, with the assistance of well-wishers, a very fine concert programme last evening. There was a good attendance and tho audience heartily appreciated tho vocal, instrumental and humorous numbers contributed.
