PAHIATUA.
PAHIATUA, June 17. Last Thursday evening, at the residence of Mr and Mrs Henry Hirst, Konini, a number of intimate friends gathered to bid farewell to Mrs W. Farrell, who is leaving the district to take up her residence in Matamata. Miss Willis, of Gisborne, has been visiting Pahiatua. Mr T. Riddel, formerly of Pahiatua, recently underwent a serious operation in Palmerston North.
Despite the inclemency of the weather on Saturday, a good attendance of teachers assembled at the Pahiatua District High School, the president. Mr V. Parsons, being in the chair. Miss H. Ross, 8.A., gave a very interesting account of the proceedings at the Wellington conference. In response to an appeal by the N.Z.E.I. on behalf of the earthquake relief fund, it was decided to donate a further sum. The thanks of members are due to Miss Junker and Mrs Beales, who acted as hostesses. Declaring that farmers should quietly get together, and proserve, their own rights, Mr .J. G. Brechin, member of the National Dairy Association executive, told a meeting of Pahiatua farmers that they should remember that every dairy farmer in the country was carrying two Civil Servants on his shoulders. There were 80,000 civil servants to 40,000 farmers, and the burden was just a bit too big to bear.
