SLUGGISH RIVER DRAINAGE BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Sluggish River Drainage Board was held yesterday, Mr F. J. Foster presiding. Also present were Messrs Ryan, Print, Morcomb, Wilton and the overseer (Sir W. Locke). It was decided that the board had no objection to Sir Waller diverting the outlet of Cooksley’s drain, making it into a “V” shape, and at the same time ask him to line the cutting with manuka in view of what the board had done to assist.
It was resolved that Sir Lover be given posts of no value to the board in return for services rendered.
The overseer reported as follows: — “Since the last meeting, work in Sluggish Creek had to be abandoned owing to an overflow of water. Work was commenced in Lane’s drain on May 29. I had to start deepening to form the outlet and completed within two chains of Brownlie’s artesian. Owing to slips through the sand cutting, I had to remove the fence and rebatten the banks. The average number of men employed is about thirty a day. I have inspected Mather’s drain and the outlets and I find that two have commenced deepening. I also notice that the banks have slipped in several places.” It was resolved to write to Messrs M. Heher, J. Helier, D. E. Johnston, Hancock and Prebble regarding the deepening of private drains coming into Mather’s dram for a few chains to stop the scour in Mather’s drain.
