ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE
CASE AT TE AWAMUTU. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, April 21. Frank James Kerr, aged 41, a carpenter, was charged with the attempted murder of Gertrude Alice West, aged 19, at Tc Awamutu, on January 24.
Miss West is still in the Waikato Hospital undergoing treatment for a shot wound in her side, which has not yet healed, and the court was held in the patients’ waiting room. Miss West said that she had known Kerr for nine months; he had worked for her father. He had made love to her, but had never asked her to marry him. Her parents had asked him to discontinue visiting the hou.se. On the morning of January 24, he stopped her on the street and asked her for another chance. She answered “No.” Later he called at the house and, entering the kitchen, asked her if she would like a young rabbit. She made no answer. Her mother told her to inform her father that Kerr was there. As she returned from the dairy Kerr .shot her in the side with a gun. Dr. Hockin said that the girl was out of danger, hut would suffer permanent injury as a large portion of the outer wall of the abdomen had been destroyed. Two complete wads and a number of pellets were found in the wound.
The case was adjourned to Te Awamutu to-morrow.
