FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) •Takatea is the name which lias been claimed for the two-year-old brother to Te Alonanui and Taurua. Gisborne reports stale that little is being e-kod of Queer Card and Cool Card, but the latter is to be tried out as a jumper. The Trentham mentor, J. Kyle, lias sent up the yearling half-brother by Colossus to Bright Song to join Afar jorum at Te Arolia. Alpina, who surprised by her victory in the Dominion Handicap at Avondale, is a three-year-old (illy by. Greysjicar from Footpriht, by Treadmill from Vite, by (Merriwee from Bluewater, so she in well enough bred. J. Griffith is putting through her pacings at Hastings a three-year-old half-sister by Lord Quex to Maunga. Like her halfbrother, the filly was bred and is owned by Afiss Al. J. Douglas, of l’oukawa. Pompeius, who broke a fetlock when competing in the hurdle lace at the Waikato fixture on Saturday, was a very u.scful performer, both on the flat and over the fences. H. Duliou. the rider of Lupin Abbey in the Frankton Hurdles at Te Rapa suffered severe head injuries when he was thrown through his mount striking one of the fences very hard. His condition is stated to be serious. , Smithfiold. who was recently purchased by Air Eric Riddiford, has joined J. W. AlcLaughlin’s team at Trentham. The success of Birkbeck over the battens at Trentham on Saturday caught backers quite by surprise. In private the ’chaser had shown himself to be quite a quick fencer over the battens. Pahu and Glen Rossie have been somewhat uiilucky this season in that they have both met with injuries at a critical stage I and their return to the active ranks coincided with the arrival of- track conditions which they do not appreciate. A third and a second respectively was credited them at Trentham on Saturday. i
The Ilymestra gelding Hynanna, who has been spelling at Mastorton, has joined W. Hawthorne's active team at Trentham, it being intended to put him to the jumping game. A good handicap horse in his day, the chestnut should prove himself to be a class horse in his new role. •
Two days’ racing at Avondale and a long train trip left Lady Quex looking very light when saddled up for the llawkc’s Bay Stakes (comments “Watcher”). She wi;.i never going like a winner, though she ran a very creditable race. Lady Quex is now to be treated to a spell.
King March was ridden a nice race by IC. Voitre in the Autumn Handicap at Avondale (comments “Whalebone”). lie drew the extreme outside anil was running in the rear of the field going along the back. He was, however, handily placed at the turn for home and then put in his claim to score very nicely.
Eager Rose was considered by northern scribes to have been the unlucky horse at tiie Avondale meeting, for she ran two sterling races, being one of the pacemakers nil the way only to be beaten over the last bit each day. Eager Rose has only to retain this form to prove hard to beat at her next start.
Curie was thought to have been a bit unlucky on the opening day at the Avondale fixture, and the son of Arausio was solidly supported in the Nursery Handicap on the second day. However, he ruined his chances when ho Jailed to jump away at the barrier rise and lost a great deal of ground.
Gold Aloney is a great galloper. She was just beaten by Havering in the Railway Handicap on the opening day at Avondale and came into popularity on the second day. She was well back half way up the straight (states the Auckland Star), _ but Green then let her go and she put in a brilliant finish to get the verdict by a head.
Gold Dawn was an extremely unlucky runner at the F'cikling meeting (comments the New Plymouth News), but will strip very fit at Stratford, 'which incidentally is her favourite course. On Thursday morning last she cut out five furlongs in the smart time of 1.2 l-sscc., finishing resolutely.
The racing career of Queen’s Choice has come to an end as his owner, Air C. Haldane, intends to pension him off. Queen’s Choice, who was foaied in 1923, has done a great deal of racing in bis time and it was a particularly happy finale when the.chestnut won for Mr Haldane his first cup at his final appearance.
English files to hand state that Lord Ellesmere’s marc Tiffin, who was never beaten on the racecourse, lias foaled a fine filly. by. Blandford, the sire of Trigo and Blenheim. .Tiffin went to the stud in October, 1929, after injuring one of her knees when she slipped on the road. During her active career she won £16,000 in -takes.
The Government of India has lately purchased nine English thoroughbred stallions to he used in the production of cavalry remounts in the Indian army. The type of stallion required for this purpose is a small thoroughbred with good bone and substance, while straight action and freedom from hereditary unsoundness of any kind are also essential points. Among the horses sent out were sons of Hainault, Pommern, Buchan, Blue Ensign, Tetrameter, Grand Parade and Simon Square.
Riu Tin Tin was on the track at Wingate i the other day, comments a southern writer. Naturally, lie looks tucked up still after his experience at Riverton, hut his trainer (D. P. Wilson) says lie is doing well again now, and, all going well in the meantime, he will give him a start at
\\ asbdyke. Black Duke will also make the trip. _ Caterpillar, too, is now on the mend, and if she continues to show improvement, Wilson, who also trains her, will let her resume light work this week with a view to building her up again. Fraucolin, the third of the doped brigade at Riverton, is still enjoying a run in the paddock, but is also making a good recovery.
SENT HOME. DOBBIN RETURNED TO OWNER. The Quin Abbey gelding, Dobbin, who has been under E. \\. Wawon’s charge at Awapuni for several seasons, has been returned to his owner. Air G. Johnston, at Alatmata. The old follow, who is now in his ninth year, has been turned out and it is problematical whether he will be persevered with, for although he has slnl.vn some aptitude over the battens, the. chestnut does not appreciate winter conditions, which naturally detracts from his prospects as a hurdling proposition. Dobbin did not enter, upon Ins racing career till lie was a four-year-old and it was not till lie was a six-year-old that lie came into bis own when ho won £550 that season, his sprinting successes including the Railway Handicap at Alarton, the President’s Handicap at l’ahiatua, the President's Handicap at Danncvirkc and the Greatford Handicap at Rangiljkei. Ho swelled his stake earnings the following season by an additional £575 when his principal success was the Borough Handicap at Alarton which brought in £2lO, although he once again captured the President’s Handicap at Pahiatua and took the Bailey Handicap at Rangitikei. At eight years he won the Scott Alomorial Handicap at Rangitikei and the Final Handicap at Hawke's Bay which, together with six seconds nnd .four thirds, brought in a total of £505. This season, however, lie failed to get on the winning list one second and five thirds being his record for a total of £9O in stake money. The dam of Dobbin, Ihapuna, was also the dam of Ihapotoa. another well-known performer when trained by FI. W. Watson and for whom she won a lot of stake money. Although Dobbin is now in his ninth year, lie is still as sound as a bell, even though he has lost some of his sprinting powers, and some use may still be found for him on the country circuit in the north.
