MANGAHAO TAIL-RACE.
A MAINTENANCE QUESTION
(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, April 17.
As maintenance work by the Public Works Department on the tail-race leading from Mangahao hydro-electric power station has ceased, local residents are becoming concerned regarding the possibility of flooding. A question was put to the Minister of Public Works by Mr Linklater in the House of Representatives this afternoon with a view to ascertaining the position, and the Minister gave the following reply:— “This stream is the tail-race of the Mangahao power station, and has been maintained by the department during the period of stabilisation on account of the altered conditions. The department claims that the channel is now in a better condition than it was before the Mangahao power station water was diverted into it. Although legally the property owenrs’ compensation rights may have lapsed, as it is over twelve month since the work was completed, the department has notified them that any claims they may have for compensation will still be recognised.”
