MAIN HIGHWAYS.
CONFERENCE AT FOXTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, April 17. The Main Highways Board, on tour of tho North Island main highways, visited Foxton to-day. The board left Levin tiiis morning and proceeded to Shannon. An inspection of tho Shannon Bridgo and highway between Shannon and Foxton was made, while tho board also proceeded as far as Manawatu Heads and inspected tho Foxton-Beach subsidiary highway, at the conclusion of which they met a deputation from tho Foxton Borough Council. Tho Mayor (Mr M. E. Perrcau) said it- was very gratifying to find the board had time to pay a -visit to Foxton and the council appreciated the visit and hoped that some good would result from the inspection of borough and adjoining highways. He realised that the board’s object was to complete tho highway from Wellington to Auckland, but understood that there were numerous little obstacles, to be overcomo, one of which was in evidence in Foxton. Tho Foxton Borough Council was prepared to meet the board in any way possible, but he rogretted that he had to admit that financially it was practically impossible for Foxton to give any assistance. Tho overdraft at the bank was £4OOO and there was £3OOO outstanding in rates. . Consequently tho council had no requests to make of the hoard. It realised that if it asked for something it would have to pay something.. As a possible means of saving the board considerable expense, however, tho Mayor advanced a suggestion to tho effect that the highway link up with Victoria Street instead of Russell Street. Mr Furkert (chairman) said that it would bo cheaper to have any • proposed works carried out now in view of the fact that tho Manawatu County Council’s sealing plant was operating near tho borough. The main question confronting the board as far as Foxton was concerned was the sealing of the north entrance to the town. Mr W. E. Barber said that the Automo-
bile Associations were complaining about tbo stato of this portion of the highway, and if tho board contemplated doing anj - thing in the matter it would bo advisable to proceed with the work before tho Manawatu County Council removed its crusher liom the terrace End pit. Mr Furkert intimated that the board would discuss the matter later after hav - ing inspected tho road and .would advise tho council as to what action it intended to take. _ Mr Wynyard referred to tho dangerous nature of tho dip in tho road where the highway crossed tho railway lino on the Foxton-Beach highway. Tho clerk stated that the council had tar sealed the road right up to the railway lino, whereas it was only necessary to
seal to the fence line The dip was certainly awkward to motor traffic Mr Furkert suggested that innreaebes more gradual. The matter was noted for attention.
