SPECTACULAR BLAZE.
OUTBREAK AT CHRISTCHURCH. GAS COMPANY’S LOSS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 18. A spectacular fire broke out at seven o’clock this morning at the Christchurch Gas Company’s works in Moorhouse Avenue and hundreds of gallons of creosote oil burned fiercely. The flames quickly engulfed the entire plant used for the extraction of oils and hundreds of drums exploded, throwing iron barrels into the street. The full strength of the fire brigade fought for two hours to prevent the flames reaching the underground tanks, containing 20,000 gallons of oil. The gas retorts, etc., have not been damaged. , The cause of the fire is not known. The damage will amount to thousands of pounds.
