REPUBLICAN SPAIN
3 P.M. EDITION
CHANGE IN RELIGION
INTIMATION TO PAPAL NUNCIO
(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received April 17, 12.30 p.m. AIADRID, April 16. One notable effect of the revolution is the formal renunciation of Roman Catholicism as the State religion.
The new Minister of Justice called upon the Papal Nuncio and informed him that in accordance with the Republicans’ declaration of principles there would be freedom of conscience and equal rights for all religious beliefs. Consequently, Catholicism would lose its privileges. The priests throughout the country would bo required to accept the principle of separation between the Church and the State and swear loyalty to the Republic. The Papal Nuncio, while reserving the Pope’s attitude, gave an assurance that the priests would in nowise interfere with politics. Alajor Franco is due here this evening. He will take charge of the military and aviation departments.
