MALABAR WRECK.

CAPTAIN’S CERTIFICATE CANCELLED. SYDNEY. April 16. Captain George William Leslie, former master of the motor-ship Alainbar, was found guilty to-day of negligence by. tlio Commonwealth Court of Marine Inquiry. His certificate was can celled. The chairman of the court, Air Laidlaw, S.M., said it was unfortunate that Captain Leslie, a man with a fine record and of advancing years, should have been found guilty of neglect. The court's first duty was to decide -whether ho snould he further trusted with the custody of a ship, and on the evidence there was no alternative but to cancel his certificate. Captain Leslie's counsel had submitted that two Alalayan quartermasters had given false evidence against Captain Leslie with regard to his orders on the bridge. On the other hand, the deputy-Director of Navigation argued that the captain did not take action soon enough to place the Afalabar in a position of safety. Afcreover, the speed was excessive w’fle visibility was bad.

The court commended Captain Leslie and his officers on the facility with which the passengers were taken to safety.
