POSTAL EMPLOYEES

DISMISSAL OF CASUAL MEN. Although 30 men employed on the outside staff of the Post and Telegraph Department at Hamilton as casual employees have been discharged during the past three months, inquiries made locally show that there are few men employed as casuals in the Palmerston North district, and only one or two liavo been discharged since Christmas. The dismissal of GO casual employees from the Auckland Post Office was the subject of an urgent question put to the Prime Minister by Mr H. G. R. Mason in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Mason asked whether steps could not be taken to obviate the dismissal. In reply the Prime Minister stated that 60 casual employees in the Auckland engineering district had been paid off, as the work on which they had been engaged had been completed. There was no other work available which could not be adequately dealt with by the permanent staff.
