MASSEY COLLEGE FARM.

CONDITION OF DAIRY HERD. In the course of his report to,the;'Massey Agricultural College Council week the principal, Professor /Peren, stated that there wore now 35 covys-. in; the dairy herd in milk. A numbej-. pfr these, due to come into’,profit imrjjjijfce April and May, would bo dried ofcjpt. an early date. Some difficulty .had .been experienced * with ,;cows ‘.‘returning” this season. Mr . McLinden, had paid - careful, attention; to this, and:' the condition was fortunately,‘ abating , considerably. ' During -tho: past two , months six sows diad-farrowed*:, and,; 41 pigs Had been. born. .The, two; ! sntdents-.in charge; of the pig section had.-'weighed all-young pigs at birth : and vat * weekly ■ intervals' from the fourth to., eighth week of age to. note the , effect ,6f ' birth weight ,on subsequent growth. The feeding trial cbncerned with the, economies of feeding .limited amounts of meal to fattening pigs receiving whey adl- lib. and £lb meat meal per day was not : yet completed. • * -YEAR’S OPERATIONS.

“The farming operations .of the past year may ybe considered quite satisfactory,,' except . for .the fall in prices of products, which‘‘has considerably reduced our" income,” states Professor. Pereq in his' annual- report:' “While" a large amount of work remains to'be done in order tO‘ bring the farm up to that stato of efficiency which- one would , like to see, the property, generally speaking, is now in a 'very fair condition, and 'further development, work involving capital expenditure must • await an' improvement in ■the prices of sheep and dairy products. “The farm is now stocked with various breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs representative of North Island farming, and necessary for Instructional and experimental' work, and this stock is without exception in excellent condition. No serious setbacks in the way of epidemics or droughts have been experienced, and our farming, one may say, has proceeded quite normally, troubled only by the minor difficulties inseparable from this branch of industry. ,
