MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
YOUNG MAN IN TROUBLE. A young man named Harry Newman, alias Harold Newman, 30 years of age, described as a clerk, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer a charge that he had been deemed an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient visible means of support. Detective Russell, who appeared for the police, stated that accused had, been arrested yesterday. Save for a week’s work under the borough scheme at Tiritea, accused had done little, if any work for the past two years. During the time lie had been living at various boardinghouses without paying and accused had freely admitted that he had been making a living in billiard rooms by “taking down” people and by betting. He had married three months ago, but when the rent was due he moved on. A list of previous offences was handed to the Magistrate for perusal, the latter remarking that apparently Wellington and Auckland became “too hot” for him. Sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed.
