WANGANUI DISTRICT. The annual meeting was held in the Rangiwahia Hall, Rangiwahia, on Thursday, at 2 p.m. : Present: Bro. J. Henaghan (District Grand Master) in the chair; Bro. H. J. Fowler, District Deputy Grand Master; Bro. I. Salek, District Secretary; Bro. W. D. Harris, District Treasurer; Bro. N. Bruce, Director of N.I. Branch. Deputies: Wanganui, Bros. H. Clitz, C. -Langridge, E. Miller, 11. Norris, R. Thurlow and G. Wilson; Sister Victoria Lodge, Bro. 11. Kindi; Manawatu, Bros. G. Farrar, S. G. Northoy, H. N. Scroggs and S. J. Watson; Ohakune. Bro. The report of the District Secretary included the following : It is with sadness and despair we meet to-day to hold our Annual- Meeting. The great earthquake calamity that has befallen the Hawke’s Bay District, causing death, suffering, and desolation to our people has roused us all to extend sympathy and relief to the sufferers. Our Lodges have already contributed and will continue to help our brethren who require our help, and proposals will be placed before you to-day to do this. It is indeed with regret we report the deaths of Bro. Espiner, our esteemed Book Examiner. He was a quiet retiring man and his loss is regretted. Sister Fowler died quite recently, a devoted worker possessing a kindly disposition, beloved by all members. Bro. Copeland, of Wanganui Lodge, one of the oldest members of tho District and a District Trustee, Bro. Keucke, of Raetihi, all members dear to us, and we mourn tho death of so many respected and honoured members. In considering the position of the District the funds show a value of £61,713, an incroaso of £1363 for the year, as against £2475 for the preceding year. For sickness and funeral the sum of £2550 was paid out, as against £2196 for tho previous year. Tho membership stands at 1573, a gain of only 2 for the year. As you are aware the B.M.C. Meeting was held at Palmerston North early in the year and all admitted tho Conference was one of the most successful held. Our District carried out an entertaining programme, which was enjoyed by all our visitors. The position of the Lodges is as follows : Sick and Funeral MemPay- Initi- berLodge. POSITION OF LODGES. Loyal Manawatu Lodge.—Total funds £10,987, which is about. £373 loss than last year, and is occasioned by capital payments to provide greater benefits to members. The sum of £9418 is invested on mortgage, and £I2OO in Lodge property. These investments produced £640 interest and rents, which is £B2 less than last year. £606 was paid out for sickness and £l7O funeral benefits, which on tho total is £251 more than last year. Fortyfive new members joined and 17 loft, leaving the membership at 323, a gain of 28. Loyal Manchester Lodge.—Total funds £5487, a gain of £179. £46§o on mortgage and £7OO in Lodge property,- which produced £332, as against £3ll last year. £96 paid out for sickness and £4O funeral benefits, about tho same as tho preceding year. Eight new members were admitted and 3 left, leaving a membership of 94, a gain of 3. Loyal Apiti Lodge.—Total funds £3325, a gain of £Bl. £2613 is on mortgage and £556 in Lodge property, which produced £173. For sickness benefits £IOB was paid out, £7O less than last year. Fivo new members w'erc admitted and seven left, leaving 78 members, a loss of 2. Loyal Rangitikei Lodge.—Total funds £4476, which is a loss of £l3 for tho year. £4106 is invested producing £195, about £lO more, than last year. Tho Lodge paid out £92 for sickness and £2O funeral benefit, about £9O less than last year. Three new members wero made and 14 left, leaving 55, a loss of 11 members. Loyal Marton Lodge.—Total fijnds £521, a gain of £lO3 for the year. £lB interest received. £B4 was paid out for sickness and £lO funeral payment, which is £4O less than the previous year. Twenty-threo now' members joined and 15 left, leaving now 112, a gain of 8. Loyal Bulls Lodge.—Total funds £4B, shows a loss of £9. Sick pay £3B, which is £2l moro than last year. Nino members joined and eleven loft, leaving 22. Loyal Foxton Lodge.—Total funds £1444. an increase of £l3l. £llsO invested, producing £BS interest, which is an incroaso of £25 for the year.. Sick pay £26, which is £ls .moro than last year. Two members joined and fivo loft, leaving now 49 members. Loyal Rangiwahia Lodge.—Total funds £94, a loss of £lO for . tho year. Sick benefits £29, an increase of £l6. Thera are 30 members, a loss of 3. ITEMS FROM BALANCE-SHEET. Funeral Fund. —Receipts, £I3OO 19s, leaving a balance of £4l 17s lod to credit. Management Fund. —Receipts, £357, after expenditure loaves £9B 18s 7d to credit. B.M.C. entertaining, £146 18s 3d. Bcnovolenco to a distressed member, £3l 9s, contributed. GRAND MASTER’S WELCOME. The Grand Master opened the meeting, and extended a welcome to the deputies. On account of a large number of visitors from tho Hawke’s Bay District taxing the accommodation, of Apiti, an alteration in the place of meoting was necessary Before proceeding with the business, the District Secretary referred to the calamity that had befallen the Hawke’s Bay district, and tho following resolution was carried, members standing in silence: “That this meeting of the Wanganui district off el’s its sincere sympathy and condolence to the bereaved and sufferers of the appalling tragedy that has befallen our people of the Hawke’s Bay district, and will co-operate in every possible way to restoro tho health and welfare of our afflicted people.’’ Bro. Bruce referred to the fact that tho N.I. Board of Directors would take the

mattor of assistance to the Hawke’s Bay district in hand, and the districts would be notified. Bro. Salek read a letter from Grand Master Bro. H. S. M. Quigley, asknowledging the sympathy of all in connection with the Hawke’* Bay District. Several deputtM spoke of the willingness of the Lodges in thq Wanganui district to assist tile Hawke’s Bay district. It was resolved, that the lodges bo recommended to contribute towards the relief of our brethren and that the amount be remitted to the Now Zealand Branch for the immediate relief of .the lodges. The district expressed the view that immediate action should be taken by the New Zealand branch, on tlfe motion of Bros. Scroggs and Garlick. On the motion of Bros. Garlick and Wilson it was deccided that the New Zealand branch surplus from the general fund should be devoted to the Hawke’s Bay district. Reference was made to the loss the district had sustained through the death of several prominent members. Votes of condolence was passed to the relatives, being carried in silence, members standing. Reports were received from the book examiner commending the result of the inspection of the books of the Loyal Bulls. Foxton, Kimbolton, Manchester, Raotihi and Rangiwahia Lodges. The death of Bro. G. H. Espiner had prevented the report including the remainder of the lodges.' The district officers were asked to pay an official visit to the Loyal Ohakune Lodge, on the motion of Bros. Wilson and Garlick. The competition for the “Dilks” collar resulted in favour of the Loyal Victoria Ladies’ Lodge with 12 initiations, showing an average, on their membership of 125 per cent. The other lodges’ results were: —Bulls, 9 (percentage 30); Kimbolton, 31 (28); Marton, 23 (23); Manawatu, 45 (15); Hautere, 14 (9) ; Raelihi, 8 (9); Manchester, 8 (8) ; Wanganui, 39 (8); Apit.i, 5 (6); Mangaweka, 3 (s£); Foxton, 2 (4). Tho election of officers resulted as follows : —District Grand Master, Bro. H. J. Fowler (Marton); District Deputy Grand Master, Bro. E. A. Miller (Wanganui) ; District Secretary, Bro. I. Salek (Wellington); District Treasurer, Bro. W. D. Harris (Wanganui); District Trustees, Bros. Keesing, Winlow and Miller (Wanganui) ; Book Examiner, Bro. H. N. Scroggs (Manawatu); District Auditors, Bros. Heald and Allen (Manchester). Nominations for tho position of directors of the New Zealand branch will bo received by the management committee meeting. It was decided to hold tho 1932 annual meeting at Wanganui. Bro. Northej' moved: “That the sum of £4l 18s 7d standing to the credit of the funeral fund in the Wanganui District at present be transferred to a fund to be known as “The District Juvenile Members’ Fund.” This was seconded by Bro. Scroggs and carried by 12 to 11. It was decided to have 1500 copies of the proposed District Special Rules printed and supplied to lodges freer Bro. Thompson moved: “That the District Conference review the levies to District Management Fund with a view to relieving lodges as far as possible.” This was seconded by Bro. Northey, pro forma, and carried. Bro. Wilson moved that tho levies to tho district , be reduced by Is per member. Seconded by Bro. Miller and carried. Tho meeting of the Management Committee was fixed for Marton. The sum of £2 2s was voted for incidental expenses

on tho motion of Bro. Wilson *nd Kinch. The newly-electcd officers were then duly installed. Bro Fowler was installed as District- (Rand Master by Bro. Henaghan, and Bro. Miller was installed as DeputyGrand Master by Bro. Scroggs, tho Conductors being Bro. Watson and Christensen, Bro. Fowler and Miller acknowledged the compliment paid them. It was agreed that the retiring Grand Master, Bro. Henaghan, bo presented with a Fast Officers’ emblem, that his photograph be taken, and his name placed on the Merit Board. It was decided to present a gold jewel each year to the member introducing the most financial members, provided the number is not less than ten. Bro. Scroggs suggested that tho newlyelected officers should endeavour to bring the question of tho introduction of new members prominently before the lodges. The District Grand Master gave advice to the Deputies in respect to the question. Bro. Henaghan expressed the pleasure ■he had experienced during his visits to the various lodges. Votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies for providing afternoon and morning teas.
