EXAMINATION SUCCESSES.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The following is a summary of the examination successes of the Palmerston North secondary schools, at the 1930 examinations, as submitted to the High School Board of Directors and Technical School Committee last evening:— Boys’ High School.—Higher leaving certificates, 10; Training College entrance; 1; University entrance, 23; en. gineermg preliminary, 2; accountants’ preliminary 12 (full and partial passes); Public Service entrance, 21; senior National scholarship, 3; junior National scholarship, 1; senior free places, 87; proficiency 1. Girls’ High School. —Eula Arthur, dux for 1930, gained a University National scholarship, and was awarded a Lissie ltathbone Scholarship by the board of governors of Victoria College. This scholarship is awarded to the candidate who does best in English and history. One girl, Dora Hausmann, gained a senior National scholarship; 14 girls passed the matriculation examination, and 13 the Publip Service examination. One girl, Dorothy Lancaster, was first for the Manawatu district, and ninth for New Zealand.

Technical School.—Matriculation, 1: accountants’ preliminary, 7 partial. 4 completed. Accountants’ professional: Book-keeping I, 8; mercantile law I, 9; economics, 6; mercantile law 11, 6; book-keeping 11, 5; auditing, 7; trustees, 5; bankruptcy, 6; company laiv, 5; (18 pupils passed in different subjects; 12 sectional passes). Public Service entrance, 3. City and Guilds: Electrical engineering, grade 1,2; grade II 3. Pitman’s speed typewriting: Seniors 6(2 with distinction) ; juniors 29 (22 with distinction); 35 students sat; 35 passed (24 with distinction). Pitman’s speed shorthand : 120 w’ords a minute, 1; 110, 2; 100, 3; 90, 5; 80, 1; 70, 4; 60, 3; proficiency, 12; competency, 14; senior free places, 150; Government short-hand-typists, 5 junior; Training College entrance, 1; fine arts preliminary, 1 partial pass; Junior National scholarship, 2.
