Mrs E. M. Hearsey, Kingswcwd Street, Palmerston North, leaves next month, via Sydney, for an extended holiday to England, accompanied by her small daughter Kyra and youngest son Nevil. Dr. and Mrs J. S. Monro, of Palmerston North, are, with their family, spending a few days at the seaside at Paraparaumu. Miss Jean Hunter, who left Palmerston North some time ago to train as an officer of the Salvation Army, has been appointed pro-lieutenant at Inglewood. Visitors to Wellington include Mr and Mrs C. Louisson, of North Street, and Mrs F. J. Nathan and Misses Pegav and Enid Nathan. Mrs Billman, of Feilding, is the guest of Mrs F. Petlierick, Roseneath, Wellington. Colonel and Miss Powles, of Bulls, are visiting Wellington.
Mrs AV. K. Taplin, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs Smythe, Featherston Street, Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs J. C. Young, North Street, are holidaying at Plimmerton. Miss K. Thompson, of Alan Street, Palmerston North, who has been spending a fortnight with her sister, Mrs Moore, in Wanganui, has returned home.
Mr and Mrs A. Campbell, of Taonui, are at their beach house, at Paraparaumu.
Mrs H. Seifert has returned to Palmerston North after a short visit to Wellington. Dr. and Mrs Phillips, of Feilding, are at Paraparaumu.
Mr and Mrs L. J. Ashton, of Palmerston North, have been visiting Timaru. Mr and Mrs Pat Ward, who have been spending a holiday in England, were to leave for New Zealand on Saturday. Mr Ward was married in America a few months ago.
Mrs Winks, Palmerston North, is staying with Mrs W. AV. Sutton, Hawera.
Mr J. McLinden, of Massey College, and Mrs McLinden, are spending a holiday in Stratford.
Mr and Mrs J. H. Petersen and family who have been on a motor tour to North Auckland, have returned to Palmerston North.
Miss Jean Begg, general secretary of the Auckland Y.W.C.A., and a member of the Mental Defectives Board, has been appointed to the general staff of the Y.W.C.A. in India, states a Press Association message from Auckland. Miss Begg will leave in April. Reporting to the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday afternoon, the acting matron (Miss E. Gedney) stated that Nurses Longdon and Baigent had completed their maternity training and also four years hospital training. Nurse Black was recommended as a staff nurse. Nurse Pratt had passed with honours in the State examinations, and Nurses Smidt, Meredith, A. Smart, C. Smart, AVhitehead and Watson had also passed. Nurses Donkin, Hydo, Black and Hollis had passed the maternity examinations.

A London cable message reports the death of Dr. .Ethel Bentham, member of the House of Commons for Islington East. Dr. Bentham has occupied her seat as a member of the Labour Party since 1929. She had English and Continental experience as a medical practitioner, and began her public career as a member of the Kensington Borough Council —a position she held for thirteen years.
The report submitted by Acting Matron Gedney at the Palmerston North Hospital Board meeting yesterday stated that Christmas at the Hos?ital had been very happily enjoyed. he nursing staff had worked hard at the decorations and no pains were spared. On Christmas Eve the nurses sang carols in each ward, while on Christmas m (Truing the adult patients each received a gift. Christmas meals were much enjoyed by patients and staff.
The smaller hospitals in England are finding it increasingly difficult to get nurses—trained or untrained. Their situation is already serious, says the medical correspondent of the Observer, London, and there are signs that the shortage will get worse unless more young women can be persuaded to go in for. work of this particular kind.
