RANGITIKEI

CARS COLLIDE. MARTON, Jan. 18. A collision occurred last Wednesday on the To Kapua road at a very sharp bend about six miles west from Mangaweka, when a car driven by Mr Ray Horgan, Marton Junction, met a lorry driven by Mr Claude Hurst, and owned by Hurst and Sons, contractors, Sanson. Mr Hurst was proceeding to the scene of operations with a load of metal, and both vehicles met on tho bend, being unable to pull up. The road was too harrow to avert a collision. The car was knocked about, but no" serious damage was done. The 6trange thing was that the lorry, with its heavy load to steady it, was considerably damaged. Tho chassis whs put out of alignment and a back spring broken in three places.

Mr Horgan was accompanied by Mr J. Gray, Marton, whose head went through the windscreen with the impact. No personal injuries were received, however.

IN BANKRUPTCY. A further meeting of creditors in the estates of Rees and Upchurch, and of W. J. Rees and R. A. Upchurch (bankrupts), was held on Friday afternoon, Mr E. M. Silk, D.0.A., presiding. The meeting confirmed a special resmution passed by a meeting of creditors on December 18, 1930, “That the furniture shown in , tho schedule of R. A. Upchurch and set out at the value of £150; be handed back to the bankrupt.” The meeting decided to call for tenders for tho stock and land and buildings and on the proposal of Mr A. J. B. Sicely it was resolved that tho bankruptcy be facilitated and the bankrupts be given an early discffa'rge.

LOYAL MARTON LODGE. The usual meeting of the Loyal Marton Lodge was held on Friday evening, a very good attendance of members being presided over by N.G. Bro. J. Windelburn. Reports showed that three members wero on the sick list. Correspondence included an invitation from tho Kimbolton Lodge to attend the installation of officers on 21st inst., and it was decided to accept. A letfer was also received from tho Manawatu Lodge, asking for particulars of lodgo meetings, etc., for publication in the Jubilee booklet,—To be acceded to. The secretary presented a draft of a circular to members concerning the proposed increase in the benovolent fund levy, to assist with extra nursing, etc., and this was aprpoved by the lodge. The balance-sheet for tho past year was presentend and read to the iodge, and proved the finances to be in a sound position. The membership showed a substantial increase, sick pay a reduction, and a general all round increase in tho funds. Regarding the hospital fund, 50 members are now paying for their benefit, and substantial savings have been effected by members. After lodge closed supper was served, and then teams picked by the N.G. and V.G. faced each other at ping-pong. The play resulted in a win for tho N.G.’s team by a substantial margin. CRICKET ASSOCIATION.

The committee of the Rangitikei Cricket Association met on Friday evening, Mr J. H. C. Broad presiding. It was decided that tho Halcombe Club be written to asking them to affiliate next season, and that if they were agreeable, the New Zealand Cricket Council be asked to include Halcombo in tho Rangitikei boundary. It was reported that the representative match with Feilding had been arranged for Anniversary Day, January 22, at Feilding. A request from the Junction Club for permission to withdraw from the competition was cancelled, tho club having decided to mako another effort to carry on. A letter was received from tho secretary, Broadway Cricket Club, claiming the match against Hunterville on December 17, on tne grounds that tho acting skipper for Hunterville took his team off the ground before tho game was finished. Mr Innes spoke for Broadway and Mr Porter for Hunterville. A motion that Hunterville be awarded the match, as it appearod by rule 38 in Wisden’s Laws of Cricket that permission to field substitutes for specified players must bo asked of tho captain of the opposing team, and this Broadway had omitted to do, was carried.

MARTON, Jan. 19.

Marton and Porewa cricket clubs met on the county grounds on Sa'turday, the game resulting in a draw. Porewa batted first and scored 145, J. H. Marshall 37, B. Innes 25 and H. R. Cameron 17, topping the score. For Marton, Waldin played a faultless innings and his score of 60 included twelve fours and a six, and he was ably supported by Tidy, who made 25.
