RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) While the Marton meeting attracted a crowd of excellent dimensions on the opening day, there was not the volume of money passing through the totalisator to make it a successful fixture from the point of view of the club. With four meetings in progress in the southern portion of this island on New Year’s Day, it was not surprising to find the acceptances flattering the actual fields on the day and the Marton fields shrunk materially, which brought with it a measure of disappointment to patrons. Tar Baby emerged from Maiden company at Marton when she managed to lead the 'field home in the Trial Plato. There was some interference in the straight, when Valueless suffered considerably, while Sharp Thorn did not escape scathless. However, the odds were long against any action being taken. At Woodville, Elizabeth, a candidate, from Foxton for the maiden event, failed to arrive at the course in time, the delay entailed by the transfer of the horses from the motor floats at the bridge preventing her from weighing out. It almost looked as though something of the sort had happened once again et Marton when she did not figure in the parade on tho opening day. However, she duly turned up later, but her backers would have saved their money had she been still later. They were not a particularly classy lot of maidens in tho Trial Plate at Marton, but Salt Pot, who, like Australia’s champion, Strophon, at present in England, claims Saltash as his sire, is of a type who should make good in the future. A fine upstanding sort, he was standing Tar Baby up just a little too much start to suffer the slight check he did in the straight and then win. The Wanganui sportsman, Mr G. M. Currie, had a classy representative in Solango figuring in the Trial Plate field, tho three-year-old filly being an importation by Boscombe (son of Roi Herode) from Mirabelle 11. (by Kroonstadt) a mare bred in Belgium in 1920 and imported to England in 1928, where she produced the foal who is now known as Solango.

At the Woodville meoting Gueress had displayed a good turn of speed over the battens to be beaten iust short of the poet. She again set the pace at Marton, but on this occasion hung on to win quite nicely from Callamart and He Whanga. Callanmrt delayed his run a. trifle long otherwise he might will have been closer, whereas He Whanga after looking a certainty for second place, stopped very badly over the last) 60 yards. He Whanga again filled third berth on tho second day, but Gueress was beaten out of a place, Oallamart. boing the improver. Another of the Tea Tray family in Tray Bond got on the winning list at Marton, when she led the Juveniles home in the scurry event. Inclined to be a little on her toes at the barrier, she was actually tho last to leave, but was quickly >in front and never came back to her field in the run home. An inmato of W. Stone’s stable at Riccarton, Try Bond promises to have a good future ahead of her, despite the fact that Sporting Chance was too many for her on the second day. For quite a period in the betting in connection with tho Juvenile Handicap at Marton, Tray Bond ranked as favourite, but when the final adjustments were made Sporting Chance filled the role This good looking three-year-old ran an honest race, but instead of Tray Bond coming back to him in tho straight, she hung on and the local representative could not get within actual striking distance of her. Better placed on the second day, he held off Tray Bond in tho run home to win very attractively.

Senechal* who ran quite a good race to fill third berth in tho Juvenile Handicap at Marton, was returned a winner in maiden company at Feilding. A three-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler, ho is from Elevant, an Elevation mare who traces to Fair Nell, by Apremont from imported Idalia. The manner in which ho finished on points to better things when he becomes more seasoned.

Merry Damon was backed as unbeatable for the Marton Cup, but the unlucky Polydamon gelding had to be content yith yet another minor placing. He was at the heels of the field at the turn into tho straight, but his rider went looking for an opening on the rails which, however, came too late. Tho runners in front had swung wide, but it was Mount Shannon and Otairi who found the gap first. Merry Damon’s stake earnings to date this season have been restricted to £245 —a paltry amount in view of some of his magnificent efforts. To say the least, Otairi is highly versatile, for he is capable of winning on tho flat or over tho battens. Last season he won £ll2O for his youthful owner, while to date this term ho has contributed £BBO, £260 of that amount being forthcoming in jumping events. His Marton ' Cup victory was well deserved, for he was actually last throe furlongs from homo, but he came with a strong sustained run to catch Mount Shannon 50 yards from homo. The latter had run prominently in the Manawatu Cup, being out in front for a considerable time with High Falutin. That form proved to be a good line, for while High Falutin > went on to win tho Stratford Cup, Mount Shannon was runner up in the Marton Cup, The form disclosed at Manawatu was borne out at various meetings on New Year’s Day and Spearful followed up his good performances at Awapuni by scoring in the hack _ sprint both days at Marton. Possibly it was the Jact that ho

had an apprentice horseman on his back who had not previously ridden a winner which saw him neglected in tho betting market on tho opening day, and those who supported the Groyspear gelding really secured a false price. J. Nicolson, who is apprenticed to G. W. Now, at Awapuni, was his pilot, and now that he has got on the winning list, ho should repeat the performance before long. Arisus has proved himself to be a very useful performer this season and it was an excellent effort on the part of tho promoted hack to capture tho big sprint at Marton on the oponing day. He was not too well placed in tho early stages of the race, but he produced a strong finishing effort to beat the opposition over the all important stage. By Thespian from Pennon, Arisus promises to develop into a useful stayer. Lord Thomond, who woe brought north from Riccarton for tho holiday fixtures, opened his credit account for the trip at Waipukurau on Boxing Day. He failed to add to it at Awapuni, but came in at Marton to run a first, a second and a third. It . was only tho sustained effort on the part of Arisus which beat the Thomond gelding on the opening day at Marton when competing in the open sprint, but he came out in tho Stewards’ Handicap two races later to score a comfortable win. He returned to the open sprint company on the second day only to be beaten into third berth. It was rather a coincidence that at both his starts on the opening day at Marton he was paying exactly the same price to win. The Gasbag—Martina gelding Auctioneer had promised to develop into something out of tho ordinary in the early stages of his career, but his form slumped somewhat last season when in 23 starts he could register but the two successes. He has, however, done better this term for a win at Waverley was followed by a second at Levin, while he scored on both days at Marton. Barry had to keep him going over the last half mile in tho Now Year Hack Handicap and ho was possibly a little fortunate to gather up Some Acre in tho last stride. Ridden by Mr E. W. Watson, son of the Awapuni mentor, in tho Ladies’ Bracelet on the second day, he looked all over a winner five furlongs from home. The open seven furlongs event attracted poor fields both days at Marton, there being but four runners on the first day and three on the second. Habit was one of tho absentees on New Year’s Day, but the Thespian mare duly took her place on tho second day to lead Limited and Wanderlust homo. B. H. Morris, who had been doing a vast amount of travelling during the holidays, being at Awapuni on tho first two days, at Auckland for the second day of the northern fixture, at Tauherenikau for New Year’s Day, and at Marton for the final day, rode Habit to victory and ho followed it up by bringing Royal Routine home in the succeeding event. As he had previously ridden Otairi, his record of three wins for the day was no mean effort, and it enabled him to emerge on terms with L. H. Watson and J. Barry, who also saluted tho judge on three occasions during the course of the two day?. Watson gained his three wins on the opening day whereas Barry had but tho one win on tho first day, but was on tho win ner on two occasions on tho second day.
