FIRE AT CARNARVON.
OLD HOUSE DESTROYED. OCCUPANT’S NARROW ESCAPE. The old two-storeyed homestead situated on the Soldiers’ Settlement, Carnarvon, and occupied by Mrs A. Shaw and family, was burned to the ground a few days ago, nothing being saved. One of the members of the family, Miss Shaw, had a narrow escape, her hair being badly singed. In the evening the family went out and on returning at about ten o’clock discovered that the north-west corner of the kitchen was on fire, the fire being situated between the outer wall and the lining, presumably ignited from the chimney, which was about four feet away. The family got to work with water and put the fire out, as believed, and retired for the night. Mr Slraw arose at 4 a.m. and lit the stove before going out to milk. Mrs Shaw was awakened by a terrible crash and rushing out to see what it was was confronted with flames and smoke. The house was ablaze and in less than 20 minutes was in ashes. The house was insured for £290 and the furniture and effects for £2OO. The house was the old home of the Whisker family.
