RACING.

NIGHT MARCH WINS AT AUCKLAND.

OTAIRI REPEATS FIRST DAY SUCCESS.

The New Year racing l carnival was continued yesteiday. At Auckland Ammon Ra, Corinax and Nightmarch respectively registered wins in the chief events; at Marton Otain repeated his success of the first day to win. the Aldworth Stakes,; at Hastings Bold Front took the chief event; High Falutin won again at Stratford and Glenrowan won the Southland Cup.

MARTON MEETING. OTAIRI WINS ALDWORTH STAKES. For the concluding; day of the Marton Club’s summer meeting the weather was fine, but the attendance was only fair. The principal event, the Aldworth Stakes, was won by Otairi, who was also successful on the first day. The amount handled by the totalisator was £11,302 compared with £21,757 on the second day last year, the total for the meeting being £27,332 compared with £49,743 twelve months ago. AN EASY WIN. On form Tray Bond and Sporting Chance stood out In the opening event, and the former -was a firm favourite. She did not begin so well as Sporting Chance, and although she ran up to him on the turn he always had a head advantage over her in a battling finish. Impetuous ran a creditable race into third place and should not bo long in the maiden class, though she is unfortunate in being foaled on July 29, 1928, and thus ranks as a three-year-old. All Humbug ran a fair race, but nothing ever had a chance with the winner.

HURDLES TO CALLAMART. Callamart, almost equal favourite for the Hurdles, scored a comfortable win from an outsider in Braggart, who finished better than He Whanga and Gueress, who weakened badly in the closing stages. OTAIRI WINS AGAIN.

Otairi, favourite for the principal handicap, waited on the leaders, Mount Shannon and Desert Song, until reaching the straight. He then smothered them and beat Desert Song by a length. Desert Song was not disgraced. Mount Shannon 'Y a . R three or four lengths away third, with Volimond fourth, then First Acre. First Acre made a bold forward move on the home turn, and was up with Otairi coming into line. He did not go on with it, but the effort showed imminent possibilities. SUCCESS OF FAVOURITE.

Spearful, the favourite for tile hack seven furlongs, led all the way. Kiriana and Some Acre went with linn to the straight, but here he was going easily, while his opponents were doing their best. Spearful was just kept going to beat Spearform by half a length. Kiriana and Seneschal were third and fourth respectively. Some

Acre, Desert Lad and Airforce were next. HONITON WINS WELL. Lord Thomo<nd, favourite for the open sprint, was beaten into third place after having every chance. Sight Draft set a fast pace, and was five or six lengths clear on the turn from Pomp, Lord Thomond, Freehold and Limosin. Honiton closed on the leaders in the straight and went out to win by a length. Dobbin, who had had an unlucky run, got up on the rails to beat Lord Thomond and Freehold in a close finish for second. Sight Draft was next. Honiton won well, but Dobbin, with a bettor run, might have won. WINS EASING UP. The amateur riders’ race wan a good thing for the favourite, Auctioneer. He went to the front five furlongs from home and nothing ever had a chance with him, and he won easing up. THREE HORSE RACE. In a three-horse race for the open sprint, Habit justified her short price Wanderlust led to the straight and Habit then went to the front, stalling off Limited to beat him all out by a neck. AVanderlupt was four lengths away. FINAL EVENT. Royal Routine, a fresh runner, scored a decisive win in the concluding hack scurry, beginning well and being in front on the turn. The rank outsider, Tea Queen, got up to head off Quinola for second. AVith a more experienced rider she would have been hard to beat. Neither of the favourites, Ruling Chief nor Hinewai, got off well, and thev never looked likely to win. Painkiller also got into trouble early and finished last.

AT ELLERSLIE. ROYAL STAKES TO AMMON RA. AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. The concluding day of tho Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was held to-day in hot, humid weather. Heavy showers in tho morning softened tho course, which improved toward the end of the day. The totalisator handled £56,023 10s for the day, as against £84,761 10s on tho same day last year. The total for the meeting was £282,558, compared with £352,436 last year. Hunting Cry and Corinax headed a good pool on tho Grandstand Handicap. Lucy Rose, Silvermine and Mosque wore prominent for most of tho journey, but Gay Cockade slipped the field at the half-milo, and he was celar at the turn from Silvermine, Mosque, Lucy Rose and Eager Rose. In a wonderful finish Corinax caino fast to snatch victory from Lucy Rose and Gay Cockade, with Silvermine right up, followed by Spearmisa and Count Palatine. Ammon Ra was a shade better backed than La Poupee in the Royal Stakes. The favourites both began rather slowly, Aspian leading to tho turn from Movie Star, Gay Court and tho two favourites. Aspian looked like seoing it out, but he faded near tho post, and in a hard finish Ammon Ra boat La Poupee by a neck, Aspian and Movie Star boing next. Ammon 11a just beat La Poupee, but was, going away in the last few strides. Pegaway was favourite over Nightmarch for the Clifford Plate. Nightmarch went to the front immediately from Concentrate, Pegaway and Lady Pam, and at, a slow paco the riders of the other horses allowed him to have his own way, Toxouma making an effort to sprint over tho last three furlongs from last position. Lady Pam was tho only one to look a possibility, and her effort was short-lived. Nightmarch received a very mixed reception after his win, hooting and cheering alternating. Results: — GOODAVOOD HANDICAP, of 500 sovs.
