ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
CAR GOES OVER BANK. FIVE OCCUPANTS INJURED. TAIHAPE, Dec. 24. On Tuesday evening, about seven o’clock a light car containing four Maori shearers and a Maori woman went over a bank on tho Moawlmngo road when travelling round a corner. It is understood that tho steoring gear became defective, preventing the negotiation of tho corner, and the machine somersaulted down some 30 feet. - . . Mr Harry Chase, who was driving n lorry not far from the scene of the accident, brought the five occupants into the public hospital. The injuries of two men were mainly superficial, but a compound fracture of the leg was sustained bv Tuto Hawria, facial injuries, and broken ribs by Amelia Hawria, and a fractured wrist and twisted knee by Jack Davis. FIREMAN’S DEATH. COLLAPSE WHILE ON DUTY. WANGANUI, Jan. 1. Whilo attending a fire at St. George’s Gate, early on New Year’s morning, Alexander Hird, aged 36, foreman of the Wanganui Firo Brigade, collapsed and died. He was rushed to the fire station, where medical aid was called, and artificial respiration applied, but without result. Just prior to his collapse deceased had been left in charge of the fire, which was well under control, by Superintendent Williams, who, together, with a number of firemen, had been called to another outbreak at Gonville. ... , , Hird had been complaining of being unwell of late. He leaves a wife and three children. Death is supposed to be due to heart failure. A formal inquest was opened, and adjourned.
