Mr J. J- O’Shea returned to Palmerston North on Tuesday after spending over two months in a holiday trip to Australia. Dr. C. C. Van Wart, of New Brunswick, and a member of the Canadian Medical Council, arrived by the Niagara to spend a holiday in New Zealand in the course of a world tour. According to a Melbourne message, the Commonwealth Meteorologist, Mr H. A. Hunt, will retire in February. Among the applicants eligible for the position is Dr. Kidson, head of the New Zealand Meteorological Department. Dr. H. P. Ward, a retired medical practitioner- from Southampton, arrived with Mrs Ward by the Niagara. He will travel on by the vessel to Tasmania, and return shortly to this Dominion ,where he uses a caravan to visit his favourite angling haunts. Mr A. G. Scholes, formerly of Wellington College, Wellington, and now a member of the staff of Scots College, Melbourne, has been granted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, following the completion of his research work under Professor Godfrey Thomson at the University of Edinburgh. The death occurred in Melbourne last Saturday of Mr W. E. Woodward, a former officer of the Union Bank of Australia. Mr Woodward was born at Port Fairy, Victoria, where his father was engaged in pastoral pursuits, and he was educated at Warrnambool and afterward in Christchurch. Mr Wood, ward was first associated with the Union Bank in 1875 when he entered its service as a junior in Christchurch. The following vear he was transferred to Auckland, where he remained for 12 years, rising to the position of teller. He was promoted in succession to the management of the bank’s branches in Collingwood, near Melbourne, and Hay, in New South Wales. In 1898 he became manager in Auckland and held that position until his "retirement 12 or 13 years ago.
