TEN SHILLING TOTALISATOR.
(To the Editor). Sir, —The great army of the ten shilling totalisator advocates recorded a silent but emphatic protest against the Manawatu Racing Club, simply by staying away from the races. No doubt the club officials will say their returns had to drop, in accordance, with the times —but what club dropped" 33 1-3 per cent on Boxing Day—a fall which is all the more telling when one remembers that last Boxing Day (1929) the weather was extremely bad, and this Boxing Day- (1930) the weather was perfect. The absence of a 10s tote and the high gate charges of the M.R.C. are driving bettors to trade with bookmakers, and if the public cannot force a change, it is time the Government took a hand and regulated both ■ gate charges and betting facilities. The excuse of expense in the establishment of a 10s tote is weak, because it would co6t nothing to run a wholly 10s tote, as I believe the Trotting Club did some years ago. It is pleasing to note that Marton and Foxton are providing a 10s tote, so that shortly Palmerston and Feilding will stand in grand' isolation in their conservatism. —I am, etc., SMALL SPORT.
