Y.M.C.A.
CAMP AT POHANGINA. At the present time the local Y.M.C.A. authorities are holding the usual camp at Pohangina ; the boys, of whom there are about 60, will remain until January 15. In accordance with the policy of the Y.M.C.A. the “four square programme” is receiving attention, the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical development of the boys being stressed. The day commences at 6.30 o’clock, and following reveille there are physical drill, tooth-brush parade and a plunge. Tents are cleaned up by 7.15 and at 7.55 the flag is raised' with proper ceremony. Breakfast is taken at 8 o’clock and devotions at 9 o’clock. Tent inspection and recreation follows with good supervising arrangements for the morning swim in an excellent pool in the river close at hand. Dinner is at noon and 1 o’clock is set aside for letter writing. Swimming and other suitable recreation takes place in the afternoon and at 5.25 the nag is lowered. After devotions at 6.30 the evening time is suitably catered for and 9 p.m. sees lights out. Mr C. Woods, general secretary of the local Y'.M.C.A. is in charge of the camp and has Mr G. Pitketldey, boys’ work director, associated with him. The organisation is complete in every detail and is designed to prove of value and pleasure to the campers. The cooking arrangements are very ably directed by Mrs Woods, who is an indefatigable worker. A pleasing feature also is the practical assistance rendered by Palmerston North citizens and farmers in the vicinity of the camp. Large numbers of people took advantage of the fine weather yesterday to visit the camp and were greatly impressed by the work being done. A swimming competition was conducted, the winners being the Ngatiawa club — (C. Rumble leader, and C. Fuller, prefect) with 54 points. The Arawas tied with the Ngapuhis for second with 48 points and the Rangitanes registered 46 points. The camp is situated in very fine surroundings the native bush forming a splendid background. The Pohangina River is proving its utility and is a source of interest to the boys.
