SALVATION ARMY.

ANNUAL PICNIC. Favoured by ideal summer weather, members of the Salvation Army Central North Division held their annual picnic n the Ashhurst domain yesterday. Large numbers left Palmerston North by the special train at 10 o’clock arriving back shortly after seven o’clock. Among the large crowd were members from Gonville, Wanganui, Feilding, Woodville, Terrace End, Palmerston North, Pahiatua, Ashhurst, Dannevirke and Napier, while the Palmerston North, Feilding and Dannevirke Salvation Army hands were also in attendance. Visitors from headquarters, included Colonel Taylor (chief secretary for New Zealand) and Mrs Taylor, Mrs (Commissioner) Cunningham, and Brigadier Scotney, while Major and Mrs Gray and. Mrs (Major) Beasey, of Palmerston North, were also present. The usual games were held, swimming also attracting a large number. A pleasing programme of music was rendered, by the massed bands, other items being as follow : —Ensign and Mrs Knight (duet), Bandsman Gosper, of Palmerston North (trombone solo), Sister Iv. Hill, of Feilding (recitation), Bandsmen Bell and Gray, of Palmerston North (duet), Deputy-Bandmaster Geard, of Dannevirke (cornet solo), Sister Ivy Hughes, of Feilding (solo) and Sister Ramage, .of Wanganui (recitation).

WATCHNIGHT SERVICE. The usual watchnight service was held in the Salvation Army Citadel, Broadway, on New Year’s Eve when there was a large number of visitors from headquarters. Colonel and Mrs Taylor were present, the former being in charge of the service. Brigadier Scotney and Mrs Commissioner Cunningham, of Wellington, were also present and took part in the service. In the course of his remarks Colonel Taylor, speaking from a text in the Old 'testament, stressed the necessity 1 of value to the world in genet the year that was dawning.
