AT ELLERSLIE. KARAPOTI’S DERBY. GAY CREST SCORES. AUCKLAND, Jan. 1. The third day of tho Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting was held to-day in hot, humid weather; a couple of light showers fell early in the afternoon. Tho totalisator handled £70,930 for tho day, compared with £74,182 10s for the same day last year. The total for tho three days of the meeting was £226,534 ltfe, against £267,674 10s for tho three days last year.' ... The stewards held an inquiry into inter feronco with Drama in tho Midsummer Handicap. * There was no evidence to show blame on the part of any particular jockey, and it was decided that no action bo taken. The Derby resulted in a win for Karapoti in time (2.32 3-5) equalling the record set) by Doscrt Gold in 1916. In the A.R.C. Handicap Gay Crest went out to make the pace, and with half tho distance covered he and Standfast had a big break on Corinax, My Own and In the Shade. Gay Crest dropped Standfast at tho turn, and stalling off Corinax. won handsomely. My ' Own was a fair third, arid then came Count Palatine and Goshawk. The winner galloped attractively all the way. Corinax showed a return to form, but none of the topweights ever looked like winning. In tho Shade was always well placod, but failed to run on. Cylinder and Karapoti were both heavily backed in tho Derby. Karapoti made the early running, but was headed along the buck stretch by Chrysology. Karapoti again led half a mile from homo from Chrysology, Cylinder and Rosshiro. Cylinder was behind Karapoti at the turn, and he looked a possibility at tho distance, but Karapoti under pressure came away brilliantly to have a margin of two and a-half lengths. Gustavo was three lengths away, with Sargon and Appledoro next. Results: ELLERSLIE HANDICAP, of 400 sovs. One mile. 4 M. Wells’s Loving Cup, 7.5, car. 7.6 (G. Connor) - 1 3 R. L.
