NEW YEAR RACING.

DOMINION-WIDE FIXTURES.

The New Tear holiday racing' was entered upon yesterday when galloping fixtures were conducted at Auckland, Marton, Stratford, Tauherenikau, Hastings, West Coast and Wyndham, with trotting meetings at Canterbury Park, Christchurch. At Ellerslie Gay Crest won the Racing Club Handicap from Corinax, while Karapoti beat Cylinder m the Great Northern Derby; at Marton, Otairi won the cup from Mount Shannon, with Arisus leading Lord Thomond and Dobbin home in the sprint; at Tauherenikau Royal Parade scored in the Wairarapa Cup from Shrewd; at Stratford High Falutin’ won from Marjoram; Black Duke took the Greymouth Cup, and Shortly scored in the chief event at Wyndham.

. MARTON MEETING. OTAIRI AVINS THE BIG RACE. ARISUS BEATS - THE SPRINTERS. As was not altogether unexpected, the ' fields at Marton underwent a considerable shrinkage on the day and the volume of betting was seriously affected in consequence, the sum of £16,029 10s being handled as compared with £27,985 10s for the corresponding day last year —a decrease of £11,956. The principal honours of the day went to the Awapuni-trained Otairi, who came from the rear of the field over the last half mile to win from another lightweight in Mount Shannon with the hot favourite, Merry Damon, third. The last-named drifted at a critical stage of the race and, being disappointed in not securing an opening when heads were straightened out for home until too late, could not reach the leading pair, although he again recorded a great finish. In the open sprint—the Railway Handicap—Arisus was promoted from hack company to beat Lord Thomond and Dobbin, it being but one of the many occasions during the day when the public proved to be wide astray in their selections. One matter necessitated the attention of the judicial committee when an enquiry was instigated by. the stipendiary steward in attendance into Tar Baby allegedly interfering with Valueless and Salt Pot in the Trial Plate—the opening event. However, the committee did not consider the incident merited any punishment being inflicted and backers of the home trained representative duly received their dividends. , FAVOURITE GETS HOME. The trend of things for the day was illustrated in the opening event when 12 of the original 1 19 candidates in the Trial Plate went to the post. Tar Baby (£442), a Marton trained representative, with L. G. Morris in the saddle, was installed a firm favourite from A\ r allaruh (£394) and Salt Pot (£175), but the public’s fancy had to survive an enquiry before the honours were awarded her. Air AVings and Jocose began slowly, Troubadour and then Tar Baby taking the lead from Valueless and Solange. Valueless and Solange were in charge as they came into the straight with Catherine of Aragon, Troubadour, Tar Baby and Salt Pot in behind. Tar Baby immediately ran up to Valueless, while Salt Pot came through on the rails. There was some crowding inside the distance, Valueless meeting with interference, while Salt Pot suffered a temporary check, and, although the latter came again, Ire could not reach the favourite, who had half a length to spare at the finish with a length back. Catherine of Aragon was fourth, being followed home by AVallaruh, Black Plane and Elizabeth. GUERESS MAKES GOOD. A field of five horses was presented in the First Hack Hurdles and Royal Damon (£367) was preferred to Brilliant Light (£576), but neither flattered bis backers. He AVhanga dwelt on the mark, but crossing the top went up into second place, Gueress having gone to the front, with Callamart ahead of tire other pair. Going along the back Gueress was steadied and He AVhanga worked on terms with the pacemaker and the pair took their fences in company thereafter, although Gueress held a ! slight advantage after negotiating the final fence. He AVhanga tired badly in tire run home and Gueress drew clear to win by a length from Callamart, who again finished strongly to beat He AVhanga for second money by half a neck. There was a gap to Royal Damon with Brilliant Light a baa last. Gueress had given evidence at AVoodville of an early victory. COMFORTABLE AVIN. Of the five runners in the Juvenile Handicap ,Sporting Chance (£645) wound up a slightly better favourite than Tray Bond (£610), but the southerner produced a brilliant turn of speed to turn the tables on Sporting Chance. Tray. Bond gave a good deal of trouble at the barrier and' she was one of the last to move when the tapes were lifted. Open Cheque was in "tlie van at* the enci of the initial furlong from Sporting Cbanoe, but Tray Bond was racing up fast and she

took the lead crossing the top to lead Open Cheque and Sporting Chance. The latter went up in pursuit of the leader as they straightened out, but the Riocarton speed merchant went on to win comfortably by two lengths from Sporting Chance with Seneschal, who came with a strong finish, half a length back. Open Cheque was only a fair fourth with Impetuous and View Halloa next. OTAIRI SURPRISES. Merry Damon (£915) dominated the betting market in the Marton Cup, with lesser money for Desert Song (£393) and First Acre (£301), hut the favourite was doomed to again go down to defeat for, after being well placed throughout, he dropped back on to the rails turning into the straight and did not get clear in time to make his customary phenomenal finishing run. Balloon was in behind the field as the tapes went up, First Acre leading Desert Song and Rory Mor past the stands, but Desert Song and Ror.y Mor ran to the front going away from home with First Acre, Mount Shannon, Merry Damon, Balloon and Otairi the order thereafter. There was little change passing the half mile post and turning across the top, but approaching the turn the favourite dropped back to the rear of the field in order to secure the rails. AVhen the opening came, however, Mount Shannon slipped through with Otairi coming behind him and the pair hit the front to battle out the finish, Otairi prevailing by a neck from Mount Shannon, with Merry Damon a length and a half back. Desert Song, who had been carried wide at the turn, was fourth with I' irst Acre, Balloon and Rory Mor next. ARISUS SCORES NICELY. The uncertain Freehold (£731) came into favour for the Railway Handicap, with Honiton (£454) and Lord Ihomond (£394) preferred to Arisus, although but a single ticket separated tlie latter pair on the totalisator. freehold was smartest to begin from Honiton with Sight Draft, who had been last to move, running up into third place after they had traversed a furlong. Lord Thomond joined Freehold rounding the top, Honiton dropping back, whereas Dobbin and Arisus moved up on the outside. The favourite was beaten at the distance, while Lord Thomond failed to stall oft the challenge of Arisus, who held a length advantage from Lord Thomond at the post with Dobbin another neck away. Honiton was fourth with Freehold ahead of Sight Draft. A GOOD l- INISH. Leisure (£373) wound up favourite for the Dash Hack Handicap from Hinewai (£341) and Adelphi (£32/), but the first and second placed animals came from the little fancied division. Pomp and Pass On were the early leaders from Adelphi, but before the turn for home was reached Leisure had taken charge and she led Adelphi and Ruling Chief with Painkiller and Pomp next. Leisure, Adelphi and Ruling Chief were fighting out the finish when Spearful came with a great finishing run to gather up the leaders just short of the post and win by a neck from Ruling Chief with Adelphi another neck away. Leisure was right up fourth with Pomp and Tea Queen next. The success of Spearful gave the Awapuni apprentice, J. Nicolson, Ins first winning ride. AUCTIONEER GETS' UP. Despite past disappointments, Nightmare (£411) was installed favourite for the New Year Hack Handicap from Grand Jury (£244) and Kilorell £219), but in a field of 12 runners Nightmare again failed to see out the distance. Spearform, Bon Acre and Some Acre led out of the straight from Auctioneer, but rounding the turn Some Acre drew away to open up an interval to Bon Acre, who was also well clear of Auctioneer and Spfearform with Grand Jury, Arrowhead and Kilorell next. The field closed on Bon Acre crossing the top, but Some Acre was still holding a commanding advantage at the distance, Auctioneer coming in pursuit with Grand Jury and Arrowhead also making a bid to get up. In the last stride Auctioneer got up to beat Some Acre by a head with Grand Jury a couple of lengths back. Arrowhead was fourth with Nightmare, Pedestal, Auckland Gas and Merry Melody the order thereafter. LORD THOMOND ALL THE WAY. Rational XI (£716) was the final favourite to have his colours lowered, the second favourite, Lord Thomond (£463), being the leader throughout in the Railway Handicap to win quite comfortably from Rational H. with the other two runners attending one another. Lord Thomond forged to the front follqwing upon an excellent start with Rational 11., Limosin and Keddar following clear of one another. They raced in that order the whole way and, although Limosin closed up at the turn, Lord Thomond continued to hold his lead to win by a length from Rational 11. with Limosin a couple of lengths back and Keddar at his heels. The success of Lord Thomond gave L. H. Watson, who recently returned to the Dominion from India, his third victory for the day.
