WOODVILLE RACES.

ARROW LAD REGISTERS SUCCESS.

HUNTING CRY COMES BACK.

Although, the weather was not so pleasant as on Tuesday, the Woodville Jockey Club enjoyed good conditions for the second and final day of its summer meeting yesterday when there was a fair crowd in attendance. However, there was not the volume of betting and the totalisator returns underwent a further decrease; the sum of £11,132 was handled for the day as compared with £14,477 for the second day last year, making an aggregate of £22,463, as against £31,230 — a decrease of £8767.

FAVOURITES’ GOOD DAY. Benefiting to a certain extent at least by the first clay’s form, patrons showed vast improvement in their selections, the favourites registering no less than six successes daring the day. The principal event —the Gothard Memorial Handicap—saw Arrow Lad, who had been consistently unlucky, of late, register an overdue success by scoring from High Falutin’ and Paratoo, while in the open sprint company Hunting Cry marked his return to form by leading the field home in the Railway Handicap in striking fashion, Royal Parade and Keddar filling the minor places. While the majority of the finishes were clear cut, tiro racing was nevertheless interesting . throughout and the form disclosed should prove valuable to enthusiasts during the forthcoming holiday racing. An enquiry was held into the running of Lordlike in the Stewards’ Handicap, but following upon the hearing of evidence by the rider, J. Barry, and the ownertrainer, Mr T. F. Quinlivan, it was decided to take no action. EASTERLY GETS HOME. With Royal Flyer an absentee from the Papataiv.a Hurdles, Easterly (£312) was backed down to less than evens with Evening Hero (£139) and Shining Armour (£123) the only other ones in demand. The favourite duly landed, although his running out at the final fence almost cost him the race. Half Acre and Easterly were prominent in the early stages, Evening Hero being well. back as they raced through the straight, and it was not till half a mile from home that he ran up into fifth place behind Half Acre, Easterly, Kaokaoroa, and Shining Armour. Crossing the •top, Easterly deposed Half Acre with Evening Hero outjumping Kaokaoroa At the fence at the foot of the straight Easterly ran out and, with Evening Hero outjumping Half Acre, the Awapuni representative appeared to have the race won. However, Easterly responded to punishment to gather Evening Hero up in the run to the post to win by a neck with Kaokaoroa three lengths back. Shining Armour was fourth, being followed home by Lady Alophen, Whakaari, Black Acre and Half Acre. BEVERAGE WINS NICELY. Beverage (£413) was made a firm favourite from the opening of the totalisator for the Novice Stakes, although Chief Savage (£279) came in for surprising support with Joie de Val (£133) next in the betting order. When the tapes flew up Queen’s Salute backed outwards to be badly left, Blacksmith fprging to the front from Kalmuk, Beverage, Flute, Enter and Joie de Val/ Crossing the top, Chief Savage raced up to Blacksmith and was alongside as they came into the straight where Beverage worked up on' the rails. At the distance Beverage was going comfortably and, although Brambletorn tame with a late run, the favourite ivas a length clear at the post with Chief Savage a head heliind Brambletorn and Blacksmith, Kalmuk and Gueress, alongside. AN OVERDUE SUCCESS.

Blimp was again a defection fiom the principal event for the lay—the Gothard Memorial —and Arrow Lad (£350) was preferred to White Fang (£337) and High the favourite gained an overdue success by Avinning comfortably from High Faintin’ and Paratoo. In the race for positions going through the straight, Paratoo and Arroiv Lad forged their way to -the front } o lead Otairi, Atholspear, High Falutin’ andWhite Fang into the back. There was little change along the back save that Arroiv Lad had worked free of Paratoo, while Atholspear had dropped back slightly. Aitoav Lad turned into the straight well clear of Paratoo and High Falutin’ with Otairi and Atholspear Handy, but the favourite strode on to train a comfjrtable victory by three lengths firm High Faintin’, aa-lio heat Paratoo home by a length. Atholspear was fourth Avith Mountain Heath, Otairi, White Fang, Mount Shannon and Royal Game next in order at the post. A GREAT FINISH. Esteem (£277), Hampden (£247) and Chief Cook (£197) were backed in that order for the Juvenile Handicap, and the trio filled the places, although it Avas only a sustained run Avhich enabled the favourite to get up in time to win by the. narroAvest ot margins from Chief Cook with,Hampden third, the last named having failed 1 under pressure when promising to be the Avinner. Sir . Roger declined to get into line and Avlien the tapes went up he reared to be left at tlie post. Chief Cook took up the running from Hampden, Esteem and All Humbug and the quartette turned for home in that order with Black Songster and Psychologist in behind. Hampden joined Cnief Cook at the entrance,. and the pair promised to hai-e the finish to tliemseives until Esteem swooped down on to the post to snatch the honours by half a head from Chief Cook with Hampden a head back. All Humbug Avas fourth with Psychologist, Teller and Buster Bioavii next. A SHORT PRICE. Hunting Cry (£547) ivas backed doAvn to a very short price ior tlie itaihvay Handicap, there being, hoivever, fair support for ltoval Parade (£398) with Broad Acre (£223) next in demand. The favourite shoived that he Avas back at liis best bv prevailing in comfortable manner from Royal Parade and Keddar. Royal Parade began smartly, but gave Avay to laranto, avlio led across tlie top “? nl Hunting Cry, Royal Parade, Dobbin, Broad Acre and Keddar. They turned into the straight in that order, but Hunting Cry almost immediately ran up to Taranto and then strode on to wm by a length and a half from Royal Parade Avith Keddar, aa-lio finished strongly, a neck back. Dobbin Avas further back fourth with Broad Acre alongside him. It was the fifth successive success of the favourite. ACMIL AT A GOOD PRICE.

Pakitere (£305) wound up a firm favourite f rom, jYf ahora (£247) and San Quex (£218) for the Kintnki Handicap, but the trio failed to fulhll expectations, Pakitere being asked to run outsido of four horses a considerable portion of the journey, while Mahora failed to see the journey out, although he secured all the best of the dispatch. Following upon a false start, Mahora carried the tapes away

Avith him at the second attempt to lead Money Mint, San Quex and Crash to tlie turn. Pakitere joined in crossing the top, but San Quex Avas squeezed out three furlongs from home and Mahora, Pakitere and Money Mint Avere together at the entrance with San Quex ahead of Pass On and Crash. Once in line for home, Statuary put in an appearance Avith Acmil also coming up fast and the last-named finished Avith a great burst of speed to get up to beat Statuary by half a neck Avith Pass On a length and a-half back. Then came Mahora, King Hal, San Quex and Pakitere, the favourite having stopped badly.

PEWA CARRIES ON, The good field of 15 runners ivas presented in the SteAvards’ Handicap and the public installed Tripping (£298) favourite from Lordlike (£275) and Pewa (£248), but it was left to PeAva to carry his backers through, the favourite iveakening in the run home to be headed off by a long-priced performer in Nea Lap. ArroAVZone and Tripping Avere in charge as they went aAvay from home Avith Dainty Ways, PeAva, Kiriana and ArroAvhead next in attendance. Fallow moved up going alon" the back to join Arroivzone and Tripping Avith PeAva ahead of Dainty Ways, ArroAvhead, Spearopa and Nea Lap. Kiriana and Nea Lap put in their appearance crossing the top, the order into the straight being Arroivzone, Tripping and Kiriana Avith Peiva and ArroAvhead leading the bunch. Landed into the straight, Peii-a commenced his run to overhaul the leaders, while Nea Lap came up fast on the outside, and the former Avent on to win bv a length and a-half from the little fancied Nea Lap, avlio forced Tripping hack into third berth by half a head. Jayson came from AA-ell back to finish fo'urth right up Avith Spearopa, ArroAvhead, Dainty Ways, Tunbridge and Lordlike next to finish. KAHIIvATOA AGAIN. Goshawk declined his engagement in the Gorge Handicap, leaving a field of nine horses to go to the post, Kahikatoa (£456), the first day’s ivmner, being installed favourite from Desert Song (£328) and Head Serang (£300). Kahikatoa Avas smartest to begin, but wav to Qucerds Choice with, laborna coming up to assume charge. Crossing the top, Talioma and Queens Choice were together ahead of Kahikatoa, Desert Song, Head Serang and Bold Front, although the field bunched approaching the turn. With heads straightened out for home, Kahikatoa ran to the front with Desert Song making an effort to get up, but Kahikatoa Avas untroubled to AVin by a length and a half Avith a head separating Talioma from Desert Song., Bold Front was fourth with Rory Mor, Queen’s Choice and Head Serang next to finish.
