EXCLUSION RESENTED

MIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA. ITALIAN PAPERS’ COMMENT. “IMMORAL AND INHUMAN.’’ (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 8, 9.10 a.m. ROME, Dec. 7. The newspaper Popoio DTtalia, states that Australia’s exclusion qf Italians is immoral and inhuman in view of the fact that they were allies in the World War. “A drama is developing in Sydney, damaging our people and our nationality,” says the Lavoro D’ltalia. APPEAL TO MUSSOLINI. A message from Sydney states that the Italians held on board the Orford refused to transfer to the Orama for their return to Italy and were carried on to Brisbane. They cabled Signor Mussolini to intercede for them and are disappointed that they have received no reply. Six included in the batch prohibited from landing escaped from the ship. A close guard is being kept over the others. Three of the original complement have been allowed to depart for New Zealand, and the remainder will be shipped back to Italy by the Orama. Official opinion at Canberra considers that the action in banning the entry of Italians is fully within the law and is justified by the present industrial situation with unemployment already so serious.

It is stated officially in Wellington that the Italians referred to in the cablegram would not be allowed to land in New Zealand either for permanent or temporary residence unless they were in possession of permits to do so. It is impossible in the absence of tho names of the Italians to say whether permits have been issued by the Customs Department.
